  • Okay, I’m not sure what it is but I love it when local bands who can hold their own with original music against any national act, take a break and have a hell of  a lot of fun playing a night of covers. First of all, we’ve seen these bands on countless occasions busting out their own tunes, with a cover thrown in here and there–but see a stretching exercise like this is simply fascinating. The first event I caught like this was Novembers’s Beatles Tribute Night at the Rogue and that evening was simply transcendental. I can’t imagine Wednesday...

  • It’s no secret that there has been one radio station in this town that has really put its shoulder to the wheel when it comes to promoting local music in 2011. That station is 106.7 KWSS and specifically, The Morning Infidelity, which runs every weekday morning  from 6am – 10am, hosted by Beef Vegan and Shorty. Let’s face it, 2011 has been a hell of a ride when it’s come to local music–there’s been literally too much going on for any single writer or radio station to cover it all. I have friends all over the world asking me what...

  • If you have tired of your Christms records at this point in the day and you are looking for something different, something that will keep with the season, but blow your mind, I might have just the answer. SunHypnotic has just released their second volume of Yuletide strangeness–XMAS SMEECHES II. In case you missed last years, I’ve included that below as well. Believe me, it actually gives your mind a break from the Carols terrorizing your head currently and numbers like Christian Science Monitor Lizard’s “Silent Night” as well as “Feliz Navidad” and Sid Walters’ “A Sublime Dradel Spin” are simply...

  •   I’m actually surprised there isn’t more of this going around this year with the amazing music community we have–granted I’m not one for Christmas tunes, but leave it to Peachcake to step out and do it right, in their own brilliant, uniquely Peachcake way. Okay, now don’t get me wrong, Sundawg Records put out a great little weird EP called Electric Holiday, taking on the standards in a whole new light–which is brilliant in and of itself, but Peachcake wrote their own original Christmas song! That’s just impressive. I’d love to see a whole Christmas album like this from...

  • Kinch is, simply put, great. Everyone seems to know it, everyone will admit it immediately. I’m not sure there is another band in Phoenix who nearly everyone agrees is great. I have never heard another musician say a word against them or even utter something less than unbridled praise. They are heralded by others as amazing musicians who always put on an amazing show and have had a slew of stunning releases over the last few years, many of which they simply gave away as free downloads. This was never more clear than last month at the CD Release show...

  • It is always an absolute pleasure, in fact a treasured moment of measured satisfaction to watch a band emerge from this desert land and greet their rising star ascending to meet them. Kongos have made a name for themselves in this town through a lot of hard work and perseverance, by playing endless shows and always pushing themselves to top their last gig, up the ante on the next song they write and extend their limits beyond where they were, only a month ago, or a year ago or making sure that their sophomore release far surpasses the brilliance of...
