  • It’s an interesting weekend in the Valley of the Sun, more for the unbalanced weight of shows and peculiarly cold, wet weather going on than anything else. The biggest surprise to me seems to be that virtually nothing is going on tonight–this actually works out fairly well for me since I’m sick as a dog. Don’t  get me wrong, there are things going on tonight, but virtually nothing of local significance. Occasionally this happens, but it makes me wish NEST at the Icehouse had occurred tonight rather than last night when I was at work. Nevertheless there is, after reviewing...

  • Earlier this year Arizona musicians made a definite impact at the SXSW Music Festival in Austin, TX. Largely through the efforts or echocloud.tv and the many benefit shows they held to get the artists there, some of the bands they helped send there got national press attention for their attendance. This year there are a few collective groups heading to this nexus of indie music in the only hip city of Lone Star State. One of these groups is the locally rocking radio crew surrounding The Morning Infidelity show on KWSS 106.7, which has become, in my world and in...

  • (Editors Note: When this blog was relaunched in August, I had mentioned that I would be inviting guest writers to appear here and invite more voices than just mine. I present to you now our next guest writer at soundsaroundtown.net. Sara Dalton who took the brave risk of being my intern this semester. She has been an amazing help to me throughout her internship and soundsaroundtown.net has become more widespread and popular than ever, thanks to her help. Here, without further ado is her amazing insight on one of my favorite emerging bands, PALMS.) “We hit the ground running, and...

  • Future Loves Past have definitely been one of the more fascinating bands to watch evolve over the last two years of their official existence. They have also been a band whose recent decisions and new directions have been more surprising than ever. Here is a band who essentially had an entire albums worth of songs that would drive a crowd absolutely insane for more than an hour at every gig they played. Granted four of these songs were already released on their debut EP, but still they had added enough like-minded songs  to their repertoire (“Seekers” for instance) that it seemed...

  • The first full weekend of December is delivering a hell of a lot of good times all across the metro area. This starts a series of non-stop shows from now until either the end  of the world or the end of the year…whichever comes first. This last stretch of 2012 is filled to the brim with amazing shows and album releases galore. What better way to usher in the holidays than with copious gifts from our favorite bands and musician friends. Several bands (now four at last count) have even recorded holidays songs to keep your spirits bright, but more...

  • There is little doubt about the loss this city experienced with the death of Mark Erickson, this past September, in anyone’s mind, he was a brilliant artist, musician, poet and loving father. He was many things to many people, but most of all, he was uniquely Mark Erickson, quirky, funny, always grinning that grin of his and continually confusing his company if he was serious about anything he said. So it was with great sadness that we had to say goodbye to someone who, for some time and across three amazing albums was a staple of the artistic and musical...

  • It’s  a pretty impressive feat when a local indie label can more than double their roster in one day. It’s even more impressive when the acts they garner are an impressive lot with mindblowing potential and a track record of success without a label. Yesterday it was announced that 80/20 Records have now signed three new bands to their label and it’s an impressive lineup to say the least: Future Loves Past, PALMS and Captain Squeegee are all now labelmates alongside the inimitable Dry River Yacht Club and 42 Eternal. With this one swift move, it would be easy to...

  • Sometimes you attend a show that you know will be mindblowingly fantastic, for either talent or sound or diversity and sometimes you walk away from that show shaking your head in disbelief, because although you knew it was going to be good, you didn’t think it would be THAT good. So was the case with the six band  spectacular held by Jen Deveroux to celebrate the release of Gospel Claws second full length album Put Your Sunshine Away at Crescent Ballroom this past Friday night. Sadly, I can’t say I was there for the whole thing, I was paying attention...
