  •   Six amazing shows across two nights–what are we supposed to do??? Seriously, at least Friday is united nicely by the Light Rail between The Sail Inn and Long Wong’s, but Saturday is anyone’s guess and the four shows are all so good. This is rough. Time travel and dimensional manipulation may well be necessary, so here is the lowdown… Friday, February 1st This day is easy, but you may need to take a few trips back and forth on the Light Rail to accommodate all the bands you want to see–or if your sober, driving is a fine idea...

  • Somewhere late last year I was looking for something new, some different  kind of sound around town and this  led to me, literally walking and light railing constantly across Phoenix and Tempe in search of something I simply hadn’t heard or something that was unlike anything else I was witnessing. Around that same time Billy Tegethoff contacted me and let me know about his band The Oxford Coma, he sent me the early tracks for their debut EP and invited to their debut show. The tracks were cool, like nothing else going on, dancing that thin line between heavy alternative and metal–I...

  • The Wiley One is becoming pretty reliable for putting out great video art to match the magic of their music–let’s consider last summers “UFO Man” which made magnificent use of marionettes to tell the outer space story of the song in brilliant fashion, for instance. I’m not sure I’ll be completely satisfied until there is a video for every song from last years amazing sophomore release Kill It With Love–not only because I love that album completely, but because each video  just get’s better and better. Released just today is the newest in a line  of videos from this unique...

  • Tonight, Friday, January 11th As far as I can tell, for great music on Friday night will be a face off between  Yucca Tap Room and Crescent  Ballroom–both great venues both very different and amazing shows and oddly, little else going on in town that isn’t sold out. Crescent will host The Pistoleros being supported by Banana Gun, Ghetto Cowgirl and Tramps and Thieves, while the Yucca will host the show below. Yucca Tap Room-Tempe: The Whisperlights Let’s face it,  it’s a rare occasion when one of the most talented conglomerate supergroup of indie artists get together and it’s always...

  • I become more and more amazed at this grand town each and every week, each and every day. I’m not going to lie, lately I’ve been  looking for opportunities to take a break and chill out, like I mentioned before, then I get home to find three new albums in my mailbox and a whole slew of previously unannounced shows. I  love that both bands of some amazing longevity and those of  recent rise are gathering  amazing crowds  at their gigs, I love that the community is coming around. Sure, every now and then we check in to see one...

  • Brandon Decker relocated to Sedona over four years ago to find room for his thoughts, his music and his songwriting. In that time he has toured relentlessly with his ensemble band decker. and issued three releases on his on his own Mescal Porch Records. The most recent release is a seven song EP called Broken Bells, Broken Bones and as with the previous releases of Long Days and Long As The Night it is once again brilliant soul searching music that explores the conflicts of his own mind and heart, between the difference of reality and dreams in a tight...

  • I’m beginning to wonder if there will be a weekend where I get to be a human being sometime soon–you know, just kick back, rest up, watch some movies, drink some beer, eat some pizza, take in some TV and totally chill out. Every time I think the chance is coming lately there are last minute notices about six great shows all of which I should attend to keep my finger on the pulse of the brilliance that is literally overflowing in this amazing state. YabYum and most of my friends are convinced that I don’t sleep, that I am...

  • I first caught Huckleberry at a gig at the Crescent somewhere in 2012 and I was slightly entranced by their sound—granted, it’s difficult not to be based on the sound system there, but when Ian Kelman sent me the tracks for their debut, Fine Highway, I was absolutely blown away. Not to detract from Huckleberry’s brilliance, but they are produced by Jalipaz, which immediately warms my ear, because I know that Jalipaz will not sign off on anything less than amazing. Once more Jalipaz has astounded me with the range within which he will apply his genius and in this...
