  • Okay…so this weekend is kind of less complicated than some previous weekends, but that’s only in disguise…every conversation I’ve had this week has been about the following topic: “Why, why are the decker. and Huckleberry releases on the same weekend as SXSR???” Truth. This is the deal. There are two magnificent album release shows on Friday and Saturday, while a three day Phoenix recipe for absurd excellence is taking place and its simply not fair–especially to those of us who soak up sound like a sponge. So it turns out you can reduce the number of events, but if you...

  • There is something intrinsically unique about the sound of Andrew Duncan Brown.  His self title debut album is a haunting set of songs that will settle deep down in your soul and reside there, gnawing at you from the inside. With a voice that is harrowing, warm and frail all at once, this is a sound that seeps all around you, crawls from within your ears to your mind and invades the recesses of your consciousness. The opener of “Auto Pilot” is practically devastating in its delivery, yet it sets the stage for the rest of the album in a...

  • It was over three years ago that Brandon Decker decided to leave the hustle and bustle of Phoenix in search of inspiration to find himself relocated in Sedona, Arizona—since that time his quest has served him well, not only in terms of the music that he and his band decker.  produces, but in the  sheer amount he has released and the fervor of the crowds they attract no matter where they play. The music is clearly drawn from the very land of the southwest itself, from all that is comforting, eerie, haunting, healing, harsh and beautiful about it at once,...

  • If you are unaware, for the last few months SoundsAroundTown has been making a weekly break into radio courtesy of The Driving With Gass show, courtesy of Kevin Gassman, Cindy Love and everyone at KWSS 106.7FM (soon to be 93.9FM!!!). In a  one off meeting with Gassman and Love last fall where we both happened to be at the same broadcast at the same time they cordially invited me to join them on their radio show each Wednesday to spotlight local happenings throughout the weekend and spread the word of the sounds that were, indeed, around town. This has become...

  • My facebook tells me that there are over twenty events of local music importance occurring in the  next  48 hours. That’s pretty great. There are literally shows everywhere tonight and tomorrow, pretty sure there are probably even more that I’m not aware of…I guess what I’m saying that unless you are completely ill, there  is no reason that  your world should not be filled with music tonight and tomorrow. I actually happen to be quite ill, so I may not even make it out, but I am desperately jealous of any of you out there that catch even a fraction...

  • It’s all too much, I  say. Though, I must admit that years ago, when I started writing about local bands and the music they played, it was few and far inbetween. Now, it’s a test of either ones transportational savvy or commitment to bands to get out and find all the joy there is each and every weekend. One event  that must be mentioned before  we get down to the weekend breakdown between our usual haunts is  a special event in Chandler presented by 48 West. 48 West is all about celebrating the best in food, music and tech! •   It’s difficult for me to comprehend that Zero Zero have only really been around as a music making, hip swinging machine for six months. I can’t even count the number of their shows I’ve been to, how many times I’ve listened to their album MAYDAY or how it feels like they’ve always been around somehow, making this addictive sound. A day does not go by where, at some point, a song by Zero Zero enters my mind and it could be any of them, all eight released (nine if you include the Christmas song) so far are up for...

  • Tonight is another night with three amazing shows, this time between Long Wong’s, Rogue Bar and The Monarch. It’s  all too much and the bands are solid at each,  though with the weather I imagine that people are going to pick their venue for the evening and stay there. I’m pretty sure  that’s what I’m  going to do and I know where I’m going to do it. Below are the major choices for this evenings entertainment and they are all pretty fantastic. Long Wong’s-Tempe: Tempe Starving Artist Zine Release Five amazing bands all in one place with cheap drinks, good...

  • This weekend once more finds a very heavy Saturday night with a much lighter Friday night preceding it, as far as I can find, there seem to be only three essential shows on Friday while Saturday is bogged down to a magnificent level. Without further ado, these are the  places you should be tonight, check back tomorrow on where you should be then…oh, what tomorrow waits and what decisions to make! Tonight, Friday, February 8, 2012 This night has three amazing shows of various flavors. In one you will be at a school, another in Scottsdale and the third at...

  • I can’t be everywhere at once and chances are with the number of albums I receive weekly, I can’t catch all the ones I should. One of the bands that I have definitely shown up late for the show is Bad Lucy.  I had started seeing their name on bills last Spring and I after I see a band featured enough with other bands enough, I know there’s got to be something to it. This is the  case with Bad Lucy and since catching them the first time, I’ve seen them every chance I can get. Their debut self-titled studio...
