  • I wasn’t in Tempe or Phoenix or anywhere near here in the early 1990s, honestly, I wasn’t even aware that there was a scene here during that time until a few years ago. At that time I was thousands of miles away devouring records from Seattle, D.C., Chapel Hill and Manchester like mad. In researching this town fairly thoroughly there’s been a rollercoaster ride of scenes throughout the years since about 1926. One of these peaks was indeed the early 1990s and there is a new indie movie being released that pays homage to that space in time, based on...

  • Fayuca has become a legendary local band during the last decade—between the amazing music they make, which intricately weaves  the sounds of their Latin heritage into an obvious love of punk rock, reggae and ska and the way they present that music live, which is completely unhinged. I had seen them several times set the rabid crowds afire at many a venue with full on electric performances that made my mind reel—but when I saw them performing a few songs at an intimate Fervor Records party with the same intense ferocity, I was absolutely blown away. Here is a band...

  • Clearly, for a relatively light weekend in Phoenix/Tempe/Mesa/WhateverElse it was still jam packed with enough choices to  blow your mind. I almost didn’t go out this weekend. I thought a lot about letting my entire being decompress and just stay at home, get my drink on and watch cartoons. This didn’t happen. It never does. I start thinking about things, music starts to play in my head, I start pacing the room and the next thing I know I’m showered and dressed and ready to go. Each night this weekend I literally stalled to the last minute, vacillating between going...

  • I”ve been pretty clear about my adoration and affection for Zero Zero since the start. Actually, very nearly since before the start–I fell in love with a demo I heard over a cell phone at The Sail Inn. Granted, it was an easy sell, I’ve loved the Love Me Nots since the beginning and to hear the two founders of that band apply themselves to a completely different sound immediately caught my attention. It’s been well over half a year since I heard that demo of “Drug”, since then they released Mayday, three amazing videos, and continue to introduce new...

  • I’m not going to lie, it’s a relatively light weekend here in the valley of the sun. By light, I mean there aren’t 2300 shows going on at once that you absolutely have to be at. I imagine that everyone is resting up from the last four  to eight weeks of dizzying madness where it seemed that we were all living inside of a non-stop music festival. I also imagine this slightly demure weekend is simply a respite for the approaching weeks of madness that are to ensue–I’ve seen the upcoming calendar, it’s pure insanity. Nevertheless, there is still a...

  • I’ve written about this cause before in the pages in this blog and I really do think it’s a very cool cause. This time it is a little different from the spaghetti dinner at the school with an amazing lineup. The  8th grade band from Pueblo Del Sol Middle School is going on a field trip to perform at a concert festival in Anaheim and go to Disneyland. The trip will cost $11,000 for the whole band to go and $300 per student. They are trying hard to raise money, so their students can go. This is a huge honor...

  • Well, this is a hell of a weekend and because I’ve got other deadlines and many of the places below to be, this will mostly be a tale told in pictures. Something I’ve noticed in the many places I’ve lived and loved, as the music scene gets better, so do the flyers. Anyway, here we go with where you should be and let us pay heed to the new hot spot in town Last Exit Live, I promise you no better sound or lighting or intimacy or better sake cocktails anywhere in town, maybe the state, possibly the universe. Friday,...

  • It came with some surprise last month when I heard during the same evening that one of my favorite emerging groups, All My Friends, would be systematically releasing their second record and subsequently breaking up…possibly in the same night. I was dashed, mostly because I had just watch them slay everyone else in the lineup that evening and was truly glad I had brought spare jeans. Mostly, though I was dashed because I knew they had spent countless hours, days, weeks recording their new release and they appeared to be at the top of their game and gaining some ground....

  •   When I discovered the first Vial Of Sound EP it was the weirdest and consequently, most alluring, thing I had heard in a long time. Now, months later, after watching their live shows grow continual amazing momentum they will release their second EP this month with an amazing event at Crescent Ballroom on April 13th.  Substance Organique Volatile takes the plan outlined on their debut, which was an exciting drawing board of esoteric ideas, and fleshes out their sound into a three dimensional sonic groove machine. Now the crazy thing is, I can’t even describe why I love these...

  • I guess I’m a man of few words this week (not really), but the description below from the Facebook event for this show does all my work for me. Let’s face it, Psyko Steve is something of a local  treasure and on  this occasion he has put together some of our most amazing local talent and put together an  event where they can do something revolutionary. I’m not even sure that this has ever been achieved yet in a concert setting. My true hope is that this entire event is both recorded in sound and vision, then I hope it...
