  • One of the most exciting things about Last Exit Live is the amount of high quality recordings and video literally pouring out of that place. Their newest feature to “Last Exit Live TV” is their “Airstream Sessions” which is where the featured artists perform a song in the RV that serves as the clubs Green Room. In the most recent addition, you get to see what happens when you cram eight of the most amazing local musicians into this very cozy space and let them loose. The result is Dry River Yacht Club showing off a flawless acoustic performance of...

  • I have to admit that I feel completely privileged to live in a metropolitan area where I can go out three to six nights of the week and experience pure, live, musical bliss presented by the most talented people I’ve ever had the honor of knowing. Maybe this should be called “What A Whirlwind Week!” for that reason, because the weekend started on  Tuesday.  That being said, due to the pace of my musical adventures I totally missed out on Sunday due to a scorching fever and an aching in my bones. I will, however, be back at it tonight...

  • Last April the up and coming band All My Friends announced they were breaking up and calling it quits, this was fresh on the heels of the news that they had completed their second collection of recordings, which caused some confusion to say the least. So, with a sense of propriety and a lack of sobriety, the band held one last party to celebrate the death of All My Friends. Seemingly halfway through the set, they said goodbye and dashed off stage, only to return ten minutes later, in different outfits covered in blood. While the breakup was a ruse,...

  •   What’s going on this weekend, well, holy hell the weather is here and the time is apparently right for good shows at every freaking venue in town…it’s overwhelming to say the  least and the choices are nearly impossible to make. I’m probably not going to help out with this matter, I have my own list of bands I want and need to see over the next three days, but no matter what you do, I highly recommend you get the hell out and see some live music. Or just get out…Autumn is here and it appears to be sticking...

  • So, how many bands do you know that can squeeze five brilliant songs into less than nineteen minutes?  Turns out that Playboy Manbaby has done just that. Yes, Robbie Pfeffer and his crew have achieved something most unique and wonderful in the world of brevity. I was actually stunned, as I had been waiting for their new release to discover that it would barely cover the totality of a traditional commercial slot. Nevertheless, Obsessive Repulsive is pretty brilliant. That’s just on the thought of “Beer Gut” alone, “‘Cause it ain’t getting better than it is right now” which can either...

  • The Hourglass Cats describe themselves as “Funky Fresh Latin Reggae and Rock’N’Roll”, but this energetic six piece comes across as mostly good time Ska. This comes across quite clearly on the opening track for their debut EP released this summer.”Keep Steppin’” is a perfect slice of Ska that invites the fun to get started right away on the 432 EP. It also features keys courtesy of Sean Lee from The Veragroove. This brings me back to the days when the two-tone sound ruled the British Mod scene in the early 80s as the world recovered from punk in various ways....

  • Somewhere last Summer I was bitching about the lack of authentic rock’n’roll amidst our amazing music collective, this is something I do from time to time—mainly, so people can call me out on it and then I find a bunch of rock bands that make music to soothe my soul and damage my ears. That particular night, Austin Owen (Ladylike, Wooden Indian, Gospel Claws at times and ten other bands) called me out on it and said, “Just wait until you hear my new project Petty Things.” Within two weeks I had and it was beyond great. Now, when I...

  • I had actually forgotten for a moment how much I love Midnight Vitals, I know, it’s a terrible thing to say, but it was only for a moment. So when I got an advance copy of their brand new EP last Spring, I immediately had to dig out their Time To Go EP—something I missed out writing on, because I was about a year too late and got to re-immerse myself in their special brand of pure power pop with synthesizer flourishes.  Well, as much as I liked their debut, in listening to equal matches of that and their new...

  • There are several artists of note that have  debuted this year in and around Phoenix that truly strike a chord with me, ones that excite me viscerally—they are across nearly every genre I can think of and I am thankful that I either discovered them out of the blue or that the fine folks that know me felt it urgent to bring them to my attention. One of these bands in Northern Hustle.  One day I had never heard them, the next day, which I think was a Tuesday, I received four different emails about them, one from the band...

  • One of the most curious, seemingly super secret releases of the year has been the full length album The Wheel by Black Carl. I haven’t even heard it or seen it. I know that its composed of nearly every track from their 7″ Singles Club and that in itself was some of their most brilliant work to date. The music on those singles was filled with the sound of a band coming into its own and while I certainly love their earlier work, songs like “My Hallucination” and “Silhouette of Evil” eclipse nearly anything on the first two records. So...
