“Like, Like” by Fairy Bones – Tuesday’s Tune

There have been a lot of great artistic debuts in the Valley of the Sun this year, hell, I could probably do a top ten list right now. Then again, I could do a top ten list of bands that have abandoned the valley or broken up or joined the Federal witness relocation program…so the world of music gives and takes in balance I suppose. One of my favorite debuts of 2013 is, without a doubt, Fairy Bones. One of four bands born from the ashes of Born Loser and The Hangers On  (Sister Lip, Naked Pizza and Head are the other three for those keeping  score at home), Fairy Bones is a dynamite four piece who just recorded their debut EP with Bob Hoag at Flying Blanket which will see release on October 15th and will get a complete review in the October issue of JAVA Magazine by yours truly. I have been harassing them for a song, a recording, for as long as they’ve been doing shows and really I just wanted to write about them, which is difficult to do if a band doesn’t have anything to write about. But, now they do. Clearly, since this just came out 11days ago, I have been enjoying Fairy Bones purely as a live act most of the year, which is easy to do—Chelsey Louise is a goddamned firecracker on stage and the band supports her histrionics and indulgences with smiles, grins and a furious garage groove.  Still until a couple of weeks ago, I wasn’t entirely sure  how this would play out on record—you can’t see Chelsey or Robert or the Foos brothers through headphones.

Turns out I had nothing to worry about and the recordings have come out with enough visceral energy, that you don’t even need the visual act—you can practically hear  the spunky, punky chanteuse jumping in the studio . The first taste of this is “Like, Like” which is officially my second favorite song  from Fairy Bones (they know my fave, I don’t have to say it and its not on the record), but in the live setting its slowing moving up the ranks and its certainly the best choice to start off the EP, like injecting caffeine directly into your eyes, it gets you going, that’s for sure. One thing I have to admit about this track is that it really shows off the power of Chelsey’s voice and the actual beauty found therein…her range from a whisper to a scream is impressive and while she can wail with the best of them, she proves she’s an actual singer here.  Seriously, like Chrissy Hynde, Debbie Harry or Karen O. kind of singer, meaning really fucking good in my mind. Robert Ciuca’s guitar is on fire here and it drives the song into something of a stellar madness that gets me so amped I can hardly stand it. The rhythm section of Ben (bass) and Matthew (drums) Foos is unwieldy, the freaking bridge is an absolute triumph…alright, maybe this is my favorite song by them after all and I have been listening to it about ten times a day with my morning coffee right after getting all jacked up by the new Pixies EP. I am, however, afraid an EP  will not be enough for me, I eagerly anticipate a full length album from Fairy Bones—something I can soak my soul in by them for a good 40 minutes or so…a soundtrack to rob banks to or at least while driving the getaway car.

Be sure to catch Fairy Bones this weekend when TMI on KWSS 93.9 presents the Electric Fall Ball at the Sail Inn with Bogan Via, Zero Zero, Factories, Midnight Vitals and Bears of Manitou. This is one of the exciting and refreshing lineups TMI has put together in a while and I can’t wait for the pure energy of the evening.

“Like, Like”

Tick, tock, tick, tock
Tick, tock, tick, tock
Tick, tock, tick, tock
STOP!
Tock, tick, tock

There’s a worm living in her heart
Eating away, slowly saying:
Never fall in love
Never fall in love
Never- never fall in love
N-n-n-never fall in love

All like, like
Why won’t you come back?
Why won’t you come back?
I’m not myself

Tick, tock, tick, tock
Tick, tock, tick, tock
Tick, tock, tick, tock
STOP!
Tock, tick, tock

I wonder if the shirts you left me when you left
That you left me when you left
The shirts you left me when you left
Still fit ya, fit ya, fit ya
Fit ya, fit ya, fit ya
Say it like that

All like, like
Why won’t you come back?
Why won’t you come back?
I’m not myself

Tick, tock, tick, tock
Tick, tock, tick, tock
Tick, tock, tick, tock
STOP!
Tock, tick, tock

And all your noises sound like sighs
Put this drink against my hand
Didn’t make you understand
Whatever- I tried, I tried
Whatever- I tried, I tried

All like, like
Why don’t you come back?
Why don’t you come back?
Where’d the time go?

Tick, tock, tick, tock
Tick, tock, tick, tock
Tick, tock, tick, tock
STOP!
