“Chasing The Sun” by Petty Things – Tuesday’s Tune

Somewhere last Summer I was bitching about the lack of authentic rock’n’roll amidst our amazing music collective, this is something I do from time to time—mainly, so people can call me out on it and then I find a bunch of rock bands that make music to soothe my soul and damage my ears. That particular night, Austin Owen (Ladylike, Wooden Indian, Gospel Claws at times and ten other bands) called me out on it and said, “Just wait until you hear my new project Petty Things.” Within two weeks I had and it was beyond great. Now, when I say rock’n’roll , that has a lot of range to it and it could include a lot of things and a lot of variations on a theme—but this kind of rock, down and dirty garage rock that rages straight out of a fuzzy, sizzling sound that emerged in the late 1960s is my freaking favorite. Go ahead, listen to all four discs of the Nuggets box set and you might be able to understand why this kind of thing gets my blood pumping. This is the kind of music I’d chew through barbed wire to get to if given that obstacle. Luckily, I didn’t have to do that to catch Petty Things, I just showed up at Crescent Ballroom one night and loved every second of their set.

“Chasing The Sun” is the title track for their debut EP, soon they will have a split release and a full length album to follow. This is the song that captured my ear and captivated my attention thoroughly the first time I caught them live, it may have been the  first song they played, I’m not sure, the whole set was love at first note—but, this tune stood out. I had never heard Austin Owen play drums before and I had never heard his brother Jordan sing before, so the entire evening was pretty revelatory. I love every song on their debut, but something about the distorted guitar hook and reverb vocals just capture everything (in my mind) that Petty Things are about. Even the lyrics, which I couldn’t decipher until Jordan sent them to me, have a bizarre, adolescent cynical charm that fits perfectly amidst the music that steps well beyond homage.  While it would fit perfectly on a compilation of underground hits from the ‘60s, and few would be the wiser, it feels authentically modern and perfectly lo-fi.  Clocking in at less then three minutes with its killer bass hook, feedback wash and slight psychedelic overtones, this is perfect music for imperfect people, something akin to psychopathic pop. Brilliant.

You certainly don’t have to worry about missing out on catching them live anytime soon, just look below at all the dates they have booked below and plan accordingly. For every bit that you love their recordings, you’re going to love their live set even more, I promise you that. Plus, now that they’ve joined the Rubber Brothers Records collective you know that they will always be found in great company!!!

“Chasing The Sun”

I don’t know when but I’m gonna find you
I don’t know how but I’m gonna get you
Yeah you look cute, and I know what to do
I’m gonna hold you down real tight and tell you

It’s like chasing the sun
It’s like chasing the sun

I thought you owned the world one time
But the universe had something else in mind
My skin’s all burnt up, I think I’m gonna throw up
I’m gonna do it all over you, and you, and you

It’s like chasing the sun
