Out with 2013, In with 2014!!!

Well, hell it’s been a damned rocky road to get to 2014. I feel like last year I was trucking along full speed and killing it with unbreakable momentum. The fact that I haven’t posted in over a month proves that I hit a roadblock. I apologize for ducking out for an unplanned hiatus. Hey, I’m only one guy–I don’t have a staff and only occasionally do I have other contributors, mostly this is a one man show. A show I intend to get back on the road. The main problem for me began in October when there was a lot of death going around, musicians, friends, relatives and one of my most revered rock’n'roll icons. It was a bit much to take, honestly and it stopped me in my tracks, I didn’t even have the will to write. So, the end of 2013 kind of fizzled on coverage here. When I finally did regain my willingness, nee eagerness, to write again, when I went to a string of shows I desperately wanted to write about, my laptop–my very instrument for delivering my musings to the electronic and print world–decided it was time to fail. Sure I could write down a world of notes and essays with pen and paper, but it’s damned difficult to email that kind of thing, much less post it. So I missed out on writing a lot of things I was ready to write, because I had no real way to carry through with it. And every time I thought the laptop might work, it would fail about a paragraph in to the process. I decided to not fight the hiatus and save up for a new machine. Which is what I’m writing on now. Which is why I’m posting this. Which is why the hiatus is now over. Granted, I do go to fewer shows than I used to, because I’m focusing on personal things and improving my life, but I listen to just as many records and searching just as hard to find new sounds that make my skin flush with excitation.

I was talking with one of my friends at a show recently, confessing that there were a few acts that I just didn’t get around to writing about in 2013 that bothered me. Hell, almost all of my stuff in the January 2014 issue of JAVA Magazine is made up of records I had missed, but it still left me feeling irked that there were more records I missed out covering (three in particular that I never picked up a hard copy of and that tends to set things back if I can’t listen to them on the go).  I was thinking of maybe filling the post with artists or records I didn’t give a nod to last year, though I thought their records or shows were brilliant. Then I had a better idea, maybe as a launching point to feel better about what I did accomplish in 2013 and not worry about the extended breaks I took throughout the year, maybe I should share what I did write about in 2013 in this blog, in JAVA Magazine and on other blogs. It turns out, after making this list, I felt pretty good about what I had accomplished. So here it is, in the most ramshackle order possible…

Most thanks, though, go to the artists, events and venues that gave me such incredible material to write about.

All in all, 2013 was a hell of a bumpy ride, but for all of the pain and terror, it had one hell of a great soundtrack, that’s for damned sure. Here’s to bigger, better and brighter things in 2014. Cheers All!
