VideosAroundTown: “Owl” by Japhy’s Descent

This is probably my favorite song by Japhy’s Descent, which means a lot because I loved the hell out of their last album Moon Noon. I am eagerly anticipating the release of their forthcoming effort based on The Tao of Pooh by Benjamin Hoff called Christopher Robin. The songs I’ve heard so far are amazing live (“Rabbit” may become my new favorite), but for the last year this has been my favorite song in their canon. They even recorded an acoustic version of it one time when I guesting regularly on Driving With Gass on KWSS. You can read about that and listen to it HERE. You can also see how far this song has come in just over a years time, compared to the finished single version in the video below. I love this song and I love this video, the first in a series of videos from the new album, all of which will be animated. This one is animated by the amazingly talented Tristan DeDe (Future Loves Past) who is splitting his time these days between AZ and LA. Also incidentally, the owl in the video now haunts my dreams–I watched it three times last week when they released it and that night every time I closed my eyes the owl was there. I almost want to get a tattoo of it. What is most impressive, video aside, is the transformation of this song from when it began to the single it is now, with an entire new layer of passion and depth to it. The guitar work here is phenomenal: Martin Sugg has never sounded finer, the percussive flourishes by James Sharp are stunning, the thumping bass of Brian Neil and of course Travis’ raging vocals are fantastic. This has developed into a hell of a rocker that I loved from the start, but now at the finish line I love even more. This is, thus far, their perfect song which makes me even more eager for Christopher Robin‘s release, because I know with Curtis Grippe behind the production this album will be full of amazing treasures. But enough of my yakkin’. Whaddaya say? Let’s boogie…
