  • I kind of wish I had written this yesterday, because there was a lot of righteous live music playing in this town for a Wednesday night in deep heated June. The truth is, a beautiful girl that’s new to this world named Louisa Jane has been occupying a ton of my attention, so that trumps all. Still the music marches on and this week is no exception, in fact this week is astounding with a bittersweet tinge to it. I’m going to cover it first, because it is the “main event” and it as much filled with joy as it...

  • This weeks shows start a bit late into the week, but considering last week rolled right into this week with great shows–well, honestly, I could use a break for a night or two. Of course, I will be spending them writing while in seclusion and that will be no different from any other night. Nevertheless, there is a lot of interesting shit hitting Thursday night and straight through the weekend to sear your ears and keep you grooving until you have to face another Monday. Here’s the lowdown. When & Where: Thursday, June 19-22, 6pm – Parliament Reasons To Attend:...

  • “Summer Sunshine And A Dream” From time to time there is an album that completely suits the season upon which it is released and this season, that album is Bloom Cheek by What Laura Says. As psychedelic as it is indie pop, as clever as it is innocent, as subtle as it is intense, every minute of their near hour long sophomore release is an absolute pleasure to the senses. Bloom Cheek opens with the hypnotic groove of “Training”, ringing guitars and a sample voice over, before the bass line kicks in, a dramatic guitar line soars to a pinnacle...

  • I have to admit that most often I learn about great new bands from other bands. It’s not from emails or ads or links on my facebook feed, it’s from listening to what bands are saying about other bands or their straight out recommendations. In this case the thanks is owed to Dry River Yacht Club, I owe a lot to DRYC for their tips on great bands over the years, which makes sense as I have been following them for over half a decade, so they’ve certainly had the time to share their musical interests and adorations with me....

  • While there are more than enough albums and EPs keeping me busy these days, I have to say that this is shaping up to be a Summer of singles. This hasn’t happened in a couple of years where the bands go single crazy and its easy to assemble your soundtrack to Summer, but I guess it’s one of those years and I have no complaints in any capacity about that. Here are four new singles that cover a wide spectrum of sound and I’m digging all of them. Here’s to more singles all Summer long! Jane Joyce – “Kill This...

  • Alright, there is at least one great show every night here for the next six nights in a row and that’s what this is all about. I actually meant to include Tuesday night because there was a killer show at the Yucca with my faves Twin Ponies and Celebration Guns, but yesterdays article took too long to write and I really should have had my shit together on Sunday, but I didn’t. Nevertheless, here are the gorgeous details of all that’s going down in this town over the next six nights. There may well be more going on than this,...

  • So, this is probably not the best way to start off an article that lauds the joy found in a few recent local shows, but the one thing that all three had in common was an uncommonly low attendance. Maybe I’m just being drawn to shows that are off the beaten path, maybe I’m taking chances on seeing bands that people haven’t even heard of yet, maybe I like to go to shows that no one else is covering or will attend because I generally hate people and I don’t really want to be social. Maybe it’s all of these...
