  • It is with no hesitation that I can say that last years return from Captain Squeegee, To The Bardos!, was a masterpiece of psychedelic eloquence and one of the best albums of last year, if not the best. Since then they’ve been working on videos from that release and I didn’t think anything was going to be able to top the claypocalypse of their video for “Ineveitable”, that was until now. Matty Steinkamp has directed what I consider to be his video masterpiece thus far with “The Factory, which is also one of my favorite songs from Bardos. Last December...

  • It occurred to me last weekend that I’ve been to a hell of a lot of Field Tripp shows lately. I was thinking this when I showed up early to enjoy the entirety of the release party for their new Woeful Common Terry EP. The show was also a birthday party for Dan Tripp and Jeff Moses, so it was a hell of a thing and a fantastic night, plus there was a new EP. This is the third, yes third, release from Mr. Tripp so far this year–first there was the brilliant Les Is Mormon EP, then he released...

  • This week it appears that all the action is happening on Thursday and Friday night and not so much on Saturday. It seems we have displaced the weekend somehow. Maybe it’s that because everything is happening those two nights, all the venues decided we needed a break for once and would give us the night. Don’t get me wrong there is a show or two of note on Saturday and Sunday. There are a hell of a lot of shows that are getting crammed into the end of July, but I’ll cover that in next weeks installment. For now, we...

  • Scattered Melodies, should you unaware, is more of a concept than it is a band.  Essentially  Jake Johnston (bass/vocals) and Josh Montag (drums/vocals) gather together amazing local artists and provide an amazing rhythm section as a platform for these artists to create new music with a sense of community, exploration and fun. It’s a great concept and the newly released EP Summer Sampler is apparently a five song stop gap between last year’s A Collective Agreement and their forthcoming sophomore full length album.  This particular collection is a showcase for the vocals and guitar work of Jack Howell who commands...

  • What’s going on? Well, pretty tough fucking choices this weekend, that’s what’s going on. Local live music rages all weekend long and it’s some of the best. Seems that even with the amount of local venues greatly reduced in recent months the shows must go on and these are the places to find them. I know this is a little late in getting out, but I had the flu all week long and that greatly reduces my urgency to do anything. When & Where: Friday, 8pm at Pub Rock Live in Scottsdale Reasons to Attend: Jessica Hernandez & The Deltas...

  • Somewhere two years ago, I wrote about a promising young band that put out a promising EP called Throw Me A Ten that became one of my favorite records of 2012. Since that time I have been waiting with baited breath for the follow up to that record. In the past few months I would occasionally run into producer Jalipaz from Audioconfusion and when I would ask him what was coming up or what he was working on, it always came to a one word response that thrilled my mind: “Diners.” Diners is, I believe, one of the best kept...

  • Though it’s only a couple weeks into Summer technically speaking, Party Gardens already released THE EP of the season a month ago. If you haven’t heard of Party Gardens it’s because they used to be called Yellow Minute, moved to LA and changed their name (a trend I’m not sure if they or KNESSET started and which Future Loves Past has followed). Since Sean Brennan surrounded himself with some of the best parts of What Laura Says and formed a full band, I have been waiting eagerly for this release and there is no disappointment found here in any capacity. ...

  • This week appears to be quite heavy on week night shows and not so much on the weekend. This is actually fine by me since I am a little spent after last weekends three day Farewell Festival at The Sail Inn. Of course this also means that I have to hit some amazing shows in the middle of the week, having not yet quite recovered. That being said, it will be well worth it over the next three nights and there are some things that will make your weekend great as well. On Thursday night, however, you have some rough...
