  • So here we are at the holidays and I’ve collected a bunch of holiday music for you to enjoy, some new, some from previous years, but all from some of my favorites. I always have mixed emotions about the holidays, so I will let the music just speak for itself.   A Fairy Christmas by Fairy Bones Captain Squeegee’s front man Danny Torgersen in a fantastic Parody Andy Warpigs in the best Christmas song I’ve heard in years. Cori Rios of The Hourglass Cats channels his inner Elvis for this one. The Hill In Minds bring us this holiday classic...

  • If you are unfamiliar with Van Adams it’s not a surprise, but you may be familiar with their former identity as Villains, or not. This is the indie electronica duo of Yvette Adams and Ivan Hernandez. As Villains they had a drummer, and now they have a drum machine and a lot more synths going on–somehow, no strength is lost, in fact they’ve gotten stronger and stranger in one fell swoop. I fell in love with this duo at the start of this year and have been hounding them since for a release and it’s finally here. There are many...

  • This weekend is a hell of a thing and it will probably continue like this until Spring. Here we are again with too many decisions smashed into too few days. Granted the weekend now seems to start on Thursdays, but it would be nice if we could make the weekend four days so everyone could have a better chance of catching more bands. There is just a ton of talent, rising stars and seasoned veterans all over the town this Friday and Saturday, so you have some difficult choices. Thursday I will make it easy for you with one nominee...

  • I don’t often write about bands beyond the state of Arizona, but every now and then one comes for a visit that I can’t resist. In this case, Charles Barth of Saddles made sure that I hear the recordings of Pageantry before they were to play a set at Tempe Tavern this Friday, December 12th. Of other note, nearly any time Barth recommends that I listen to something, I pretty much do so immediately because he has never steered me incorrectly (Celebration Guns and Morning Theft for instance). Pageantry, from Denton, Texas, is another clear case of this. I have...

  • You might know Miller James a bit better as J. Miller from Bad Lucy or even as Gram Miller which was the first solo moniker he used amidst the break up of Bad Lucy. Do not be confused by the changing names for the guy with the golden throat that looks the same (I once asked him if he had a brother named Gram after seeing pictures online), he is one and the same. I was saddened by the loss of Bad Lucy, because I thought they really could get somewhere, but I always felt that this was the guy...

  • It’s a little difficult to wrap my head around the fact that Banana Gun is celebrating their five year anniversary this week. Granted, I’ve been writing about local music for nearly seven years, but it seemed that when things just got started rolling around here Banana Gun was a part of the new emerging scene. Now, half a decade later, they are one of the top local bands and seasoned veterans at that. Across five years they have released one studio EP (more of a mini-album/short full album), two brilliant full lengths and a live EP–all to critical praise, including...
