  • I have to admit that the choice for my Favorite EP of 2014 was pretty damn easy. I knew it was my favorite after it was the only CD that remained in my player for three months straight. It is also the EP that genuinely made me the happiest out of the fifty or so I spent time with last year. The self-titled debut EP by Lawnchair has to be one of the most delightful surprises of 2014. All six songs on the release are perfect additions to a poolside Summer soundtrack. Not only are all these songs catchy as...

  • I’ve listened to nearly fifty EPs and these were some difficult choices, I must admit. I loved everything I wrote about last year, but one of the qualifiers for this category and the categories that follow is “Could I sing a song from the EP without thinking about it?” the answer to all of the 22 below was yes, or I could at least hum the tune. All but my absolute favorite is found here, but that gets a post all its own, because it deserves it as my favorite above and beyond all else from 2014. So, without further...

  • The first time I encountered decker. they were touring in support of their second release Long As The Night (2010) and looking soon forward to their third. I had never heard them or heard of them before and I’m not sure how they had escaped my radar. It was at the Rogue Bar and I remember standing their transfixed for the entire set, I’m not sure I even moved or blinked the entire time. It was as though their music was literally invoking the spirits of the southwest to accompany them and it felt like a desert wind was blowing...

  • Yes, I still have plenty of favorites to go through on these pages from last year. Due to bouts of the flu and other such nonsense my schedule on getting these out has been delayed, but all the lists are locked in my head and must be released. I spent too much time thinking about them. This list has a definite order and it’s based purely on how much joy they brought me, how much I loved the song and the production value. Sometimes one of these values would trump the other. I couldn’t decide on ten so I went...

  • Let’s face it, I go to a lot of shows and in 2014, I was actually trying to cut back. Truth is, going to shows is what keeps me writing and I find out about more new bands that way, by talking to musicians than on using any social media platform. It’s in the moment and you’re drinking and smoking and everyone has a new favorite band, then I write them down and check them out. At some point I know I said I was going to cut down on the amount of shows I would see, but I think...
