Archive for June, 2015

  • I have to say that this summer is no disappointment in shows happening every day of the week. This has been a tremendous June and looking ahead to July and August it appears that this is going to keep on trucking. This is actually odd behavior for the local scene, because usually bands start to cool their jets around this time of year as we start to hibernate in our air conditioned boxes. This does not appear to be the case this year and this week it all starts tonight. When & Where: Wednesday, June 24th, 8pm at Pho Cao,...

When & Where: Tuesday, June 16th, 8pm at Valley Bar, Phoenix Reasons To Attend: Fever The Ghost is cool. Genre is cool. Valley Bar is freaking ridiculously cool. The show is free. Enough said. • So there is a lot of great stuff happening this week, but I’ve tried to make it easy for you. I can’t find a damn thing happening Thursday, but the rest of the week is booked pretty solid and it starts tonight! Also, if you think this week is great (not to make this week jealous or anything), next weekend starts on Tuesday and rockets through the entire way to Fathers Day! Anyway, here is what’s going on for the rest of the week that you may want to check out. I’ve decided to combine “Reasons To Attend” and “Commentary”...

  • It’s probably old news by now, but Leonardo DiCapricorn is no more. Luckily, they did not disband before playing a final show (which was amazing) and leaving us with a parting gift in the form of the Friends, Anemones EP.  It happens to be a perfect send off to an all too short lived band that lit up the scene with their intrinsic mania for less than two years. It starts with “B-Day Song” which is an insane rant about both confusion and birthdays. “Bummer Daze” is pretty much the star of the show and easily the perfect AZ single...

  • I have never hidden my affection and adoration for Fairy Bones from the first moment I saw them. Subsequently, I think I’ve written about ever release and moment of their budding career as one of the most compelling rock acts in Phoenix. Today, Fairy Bones is releasing their video for “Banshee”, a truly great single from their full length album debut Dramabot, released earlier this year. For a complete run down on the album you can check out the track by track review found HERE. It is one album released so far this year that I still find myself listening...

  • So a lot of people have noticed that there has been nothing going on with SoundsAroundTown for the last three months. I spent the first two months of the year summarizing the great music of 2014 and then took a hiatus. It wasn’t something I really meant to do, it just sort of happened. First of all, I have a nifty column called “Right Hear, Right Now” over at the Phoenix New Times music blog Up On the Sun, that comes out a few times a month and features five new songs from local artists. You can find the entire...
