What’s Going Ahhhn…

This week has great shows from beginning to end, but Saturday is just fucking ridiculous. I mean seriously there are ten shows of value that night and though I haven’t spotlighted all of them, I’m pretty sure you could end up at any venue and have your mind blown. The rest of the days the choices are easy and if the weather was better I’d bounce from place to place like a madman. But it’s cold and I drive an open Jeep Wrangler and I’m going to end up picking one place and stay there. Still, this is pretty rough for the decisions required alone.

When & Where: Wednesday, December 16th, 8pm at Crescent Ballroom
Reasons To Attend: Jason Patrick Woodbury pretty much laid the groundwork for this in his stellar article found HERE. Material from two of my favorite albums are being covered in this one evening. If you like Bob Dylan’s Nashville Skyline and The Byrds’ Sweetheart of The Rodeo albums you are going to freak over this special evening at Crescent Ballroom. And as always, it’s for charity!

“Musically Many Levels of Laughter has a neat breadth: His jauntier, jazzier passages explore the bits of Tim Buckley’s Starsailor that Doldrums bypassed on Lesser Evil, while interlude “Markers” deploys curious, playful paddling sounds against an odd, melancholy jingle. His hooks have nuance and charm–you can hear the cognitive cogs whirring behind ‘Apophis’’s squiggling organs, the shivery up-strokes in ‘Between the Channels’.” – Pitchfork

“Fernandez’s debut shows a remarkable amount of personality and vision.” – Consequence of Sound

“His lo-fi take on baroque bedroom-pop is covered in squiggly analogue fuzz, like on ‘Holy Hesitation’ but branches off into everything from free-jazz interpolations on ‘Filled With Joy’ to the uneasy MIDI melancholy of ‘Apophis.’ Fernandez pens lyrics that lean into one another, piling up in the corners of his songs while the warped melodies and warbling synths drone on and on.” – Stereogum

When & Where: Saturday, December 19th, 8pm at The Rebel Lounge
Reasons To Attend: Many, many years ago I moved to this valley and one of the bands still being talked about at the time was Trunk Federation. They are one of the few I remember from those early days before I really started paying attention to local tunes. This evening is going to be amazing with no less than three reunions (so far) taking place. I’m not sure I can miss this night.
Other Details: The reunions of Phoenix’s beloved bands Trunk Federation, Less Pain Forever and the Beat Angels are just three of the 997 plus reunions scheduled to take place at Night of 1,000 Reunions, Saturday, December 19 at the Rebel Lounge.

The show will be sponsored by Onus Records and Heritage Hump, who will be releasing a charity CD “Heritage Hump Helps, Vol 1″ that same night containing many of the bands who’ve been highlights of the Heritage Hump series that has appeared in Phoenix New Times every Wednesday since 2015 began. Proceeds from the sale of this album will go to the Sunnyslope AZ Humane Society.

Stay tuned to this event for more reunions to be announced.

You can buy advance tickets at http://www.therebellounge.com/event/971563 and at Stinkweeds.

When & Where: Saturday, December 19th, 8pm at CASA Lounge
Reasons To Attend: Since I love the first three bands on the roster here I had to check out Way Under just now and then listened to their whole damn EP and it’s really great skate punk. I mean I love it and I wish I would have known about it in April when it came out. That said, I already knew that Sonoran Chorus, Soft Deadlines and The Echo Bombs were wonderful. This is going to be great, especially if you want to get your indie rock on.
Other Details: Set times:
Sonoran Chorus 8:30pm
Soft Deadlines 9:30pm
The Echo Bombs 10:30pm
Way Under 11:30pm

When & Where: Sunday, December 20th, 7pm at The Rebel Lounge
Reasons To Attend: The perfect show to chill out to at the end of a crazy weekend. I have a feeling I will be writing all Sunday, otherwise I would plan on making this, but I also want this same show with a fireplace or a campfire and I’m not sure why. Anyway, this is going to a fantastic night of easygoing Americana.
Other Details: Americana Christmas at Rebel Lounge with:
