What’s Going Ahhhn…

Ever have a week sneak up on you and you think that maybe this one will be your chance to stay in and take it easy and then you look at the upcoming shows and you’re like “Holy fuck, what was I thinking?” Yeah, that’s this week. The shows have been raging all week long, but I’ve tried to catch nearly everything I could from Wednesday to Saturday night…thankfully, you get to rest on Sunday (maybe). You could catch a showing of Dig! at Crescent Ballroom on Sunday to take that thought right out of our head. You could also go to SXSR in Tempe, but I have no idea what Sunday’s lineup will be at this time, or you could go to The Firehouse for a freaky musical. Yeah, forget about resting on Sunday, ’twas a silly notion. Anyway, here’s the lowdown on the hoedown…

When & Where: Wednesday, March 30th, 7:30pm at The Trunk Space
Reasons To Attend: I wrote about The Blank Waves last week in my singles column for the Phoenix New times HERE. I think they are pretty much amazing and they’ve assembled a hell of a crew for their EP release party. The EP is damn good and I’ve seen video of these guys live and I still don’t know what to expect at their show. This is a great way to spend a Wednesday night, also you don’t need to be on drugs to get high–the visuals that The Blank Waves provide will take care of that for you, plus their trippy as hell soundtrack.
Other Details:The Blank Waves are releasing an album and we’d like for you folks to join us in the festivities!
Blank Waves: Psych
Waytansea Point: Sounds
Amadoo’s Crew: Pop
Eli Kluger: Personality
Free with donations to the Trunk Space gladly accepted :)

When & Where: Thursday, March 31st, 8:00pm at The Rebel Lounge
Reasons To Attend: Soft Deadlines, Zodiac Bash and The Rolling Blackouts at The Rebel Lounge on the same Thursday? Sign me the fuck up. This is a seriously great lineup and you can get smashed while enjoying the tunes and pretending it’s Friday night. When & Where: Thursday, March 31st, 7:30pm at Twisted Lizard, Scottsdale
Reasons To Attend: The two lovely ladies from Ghost Cat Attack will be performing as a duo at Twisted Lizard. I have no idea what’s in store, but I know they have been practicing their hearts out in preparation for this special evening. This should be a good time at a great place!
Other Details :D elicious food, laid back vibe and Sarah Chapman singing her heart out with special guest Andrea Gudeyon on bass!! Come get Twisted with us ;-)

When & Where: Thursday, March 31st, 7:30pm at The Rhythm Room
Reasons To Attend: The Brothers Reed are from Oregon, while The Blood Feud Family Singers and Brutha White are local. Together they will all be awesome. I was also reminded recently at how great the sound is at The Rhythm Room when I went to a show their recently. It’s a really amazing set up there and you can see why this used to be THE pick of venues to host your release party. This isn’t a release party, but I know it’s going to sound damn good.

Reasons To Attend: On April 9th, Snake! Snake! Snakes! will release their new album Tranquilo. That said, you don’t have to wait that long to hear it as they will be holding a listening party for the album this Thursday. The album is one of the best of the year, local or otherwise, and after a few dozen listens it just gets better and better. If you are champing at the bit to hear it, this is where you should be for the early evening Thursday.

Reasons To Attend: Phantom Party has been blowing my mind lately, both on record and live on stage–if you haven’t checked them out, I highly recommend it. Other Details: some big time fun bands playing on April 1st, and I’m not joking around! Entry is $5, and be sure to bring your friends and plenty of high fives.

When & Where: Friday, April 1st, 8pm at The Rebel Lounge
Reasons To Attend: At the end of February, decker. recorded a live album at Last Exit Live. This Friday they will release that live album. Though it isn’t the complete evening, it sure captures the spirit of that night. Seriously though, it’s an essential necessity in your decker. collection, I’ve listened to it a few times through and it stuns me every damn time. They will be joined by friends from New Mexico, Red Light Cameras and friends from home, Harper and The Moths and Fairy Bones! The lineup is stacked, the album is great, there is no reason not to be here, unless you are going to all the other shows happening Friday night. Needless to say, this is where I’ll be.
Other Details: decker. just recorded a live album and on Friday, April 1 we will release it at The Rebel Lounge.

When & Where: Friday, April 1st, 9pm at Time Out Lounge
Reasons To Attend: Apparently Snailmate is hosting shows at Time Out Lounge now. They aren’t actually playing, just hosting. That said, it’s a great lineup and for once I actually know the out of town band! Great Shapes hail from El Paso, Texas and they are amazing live. I just looked for a copy of their EP, which I actually have somewhere, but couldn’t find it. In addition to that stunner, you have local lovelies Soft Deadlines, Lawnchair and The Echo Bombs! If you are sticking to the East Side on Friday, I’d stick right here. There wasn’t a flyer for the show, so I decided to use a lovely picture by Frank C Photography of Daniel Endicott from The Echo Bombs, because it looks majestic.
Other Details: Snailmate Presents:

10pm Great Shapes
11pm Lawnchair
12am The Echo Bombs

When & Where: Friday, April 1st, 8pm at Cactus Jacks
Reasons To Attend: Creamy Dave is a music legend in this town, at least for the last decade anyway. He has lined up an amazing group of bands for his birthday bash this year. The detail below do more than enough justice for what is sure to be a memorable evening.
Other Details: Per Creamy Dave himself: “It’s that time of year coming up again for me, and I like nothing better than putting together a great show with great music to celebrate it. This year’s line up will include Some Magical Animal, Korbe in the Moment, Ghetto Cowgirl and one of my favorites in town, Huckleberry. Doors will be at 7, first note hits at 8. This event will also be sponsored by Mexican Moonshine Tequila providing drink specials like $5 Mexican Moonshine shots and Margharitas! And cover for this awsome night of music will cost you a scant $5! Who can beat that. So please come on out join in the fun and enjoy kick ass music, good people, and maybe a libation or 5.”

When & Where: Friday, April 1st, 9pm at 2503 w. kilarea ave mesa az 85202
Reasons To Attend: SURF has a new album dropping this Friday and it’s freaking gorgeous. It’s clearly the best work Aaron “Surf” Tijerina has committed to record. It also happens to be great to skate to, or sleep to or hang out staring at the sky or…well, you get the idea. Instead of a wild release show the album will be released at a house party. Check out the details below.
Other Details: Hey Surfers, as you know “ISLANDS” LP comes out Friday and we will be having a party instead of a release show. Please come out have a beer ( and bring your DOC )with us and hear the new record and celebrete the hard work put into the record. There will be download cards / stickers and a few t-shirts in a bucket of free stuff available and a viewing of my new video “Heaven” along with good times to be had so come out and support local music and get weird.

When & Where: Friday, April 1st, 8pm at Last Exit Live
Reasons To Attend: If you want to have your face melted by one of the best jam bands on the festival scene right now, eat your drugs in the car and get to Last Exit Live for some mind blowing fun. Not sure they have an opening act, which means they will probably play for like, three or four hours.
Other Details: Friday night!! Grab your tickets if you haven’t already!

When & Where: Saturday, April 2nd, 8pm at Pho Cao
Reasons To Attend: Here again, Great Shapes are still in town and still stunning. I have to find their EP before Saturday to be fully prepared for this show. I love Pho Cao for the music, the coffee and the delicious food…specifically the Shaken Beef. This night is amazing and I may go without eating all day just to chow down on their fantastic fare. The lineup is amazing over all. Sara Robinson (of Sara Robinson & The Midnight Special) will be kicking things off. The Commute are new, but apparently build their set up enough to have a mosh pit. The Pubes are always great. I just caught Dirty Sunset last week and they blew my fucking mind. Seriously. Keep an eye on these guys. Jane N’ the Jungle are getting ready to release their debut record, which I am highly anticipating. Yeah, this show is non-stop fun.

When & Where: Saturday, April 2nd and Sunday, April 3rd, 8/7pm at The Firehouse Gallery
Reasons To Attend: I missed my chance at seeing this late last year when this debuted and after having listened to the soundtrack a few times, I was disappointed I had. That said, I’m going to try to make the Sunday edition of this show. Of note, the Firehouse is up for sale. Michael and Joanna are simply the tenants. So, everyone is raising money through several avenues, to either buy the Firehouse, or to go towards the next venture. On these special evenings all money raised in ticket sales are going toward the cause, and additional donations will be accepted as well.
IT’S BACK! Swimming in the Head, the dark musical comedy, based on Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo that premiered at the Firehouse last December is back for TWO DIZZiFYING PERFORMANCES APRIL 2 & 3!

DIrected by Sheri Amourr (Rocky Horror at the Firehouse) and Amy F. Sell, with book & music by Serene Dominic, Swimming in the Head turns this classic tale of murder, mistaken identity and self deception to new toe-tapping heights and despairing lows.

The original cast returns, with Joe Sawinski, Sara Griffin, Margo Brookover, Joobs and Serene Dominic, who will act in the show, as well as serve as musical director. Marcella Grassa and Jill Louise are the two narrators of the show, two girls who just saw the movie on the Turner Classic Network and can’t remember the story quite the way you might after a night of hard drinking. Watch as they reimagine the whole thing as a musical that will have you bopping in your seat and reaching for your heart medication!

Performances are on Saturday, APRIL 2 at 8:00 PM, and Sunday, APRIL 3, at 7:00 PM at The Firehouse Art Space in downtown Phoenix. This is an OUTDOOR venue! Last time we put on this production it was winter so be appraIsed that it will be spring but it will also still be Arizona.

Photographers are welcome and encouraged! The only catch is, you have to share the pictures with us like crazy!

Tickets are $7 and can be purchased in advance online at:
Tickets also available at the door the nights of the show.
