What’s Going Ahhhn…

BAM! It’s August again and though there really wasn’t a lull in shows this Summer, any pretense of such a lull is over and now albums, singles and EPs are going to be released left and right. Right from the get go this week seems filled with revitalized energy toward pushing all the great music for the rest of the year out starting now. It’s exciting for me, because in some cases I’ve had these records for months and in others, I get to enjoy the surprise right along with you. Either way, it’s fine with me, there are three amazing records being released this week alone. Check out all the glory below.

When & Where: Tuesday, August 2nd, 8pm at The Rogue Bar
Reasons To Attend: Every Tuesday in August is Citrus Clouds night at The Rogue Bar. They are one of my favorite live bands in town and I can’t urge you enough to check them out in their wild habitat. If you like their record, the show will blow your fucking mind wide open. Each week they will be sure to have exciting guests, because they keep extremely cool company and this week it’s Militia Joan Hart, US Depressed and Thurston!
Other Details:  Citrus Clouds will be playing the Rogue Bar every Tuesday night in August. We’ll be having cool giveaways, events and other cool surprises all month. More detail to follow.

When & Where: Tuesday, August 2nd, 8pm at Double Nickels Collective, Tempe
Reasons To Attend: This show is going to slay. I have no idea about Winter Break, but they seem cool. On the local front there is Captain Samurai who put out one of my favorite albums of last year, who put out one of my favorite EPs of this year and Doomed To Bloom who I just discovered this second, like I’m literally at 2:32 in the first song on the 1995 EP they just dropped and I’m digging the fuck out of it. The name hooked me. I had to know.

Reasons To Attend: First of all, Shawn Johnson’s In the Round is like the king of all “In The Rounds” and it’s always fun with his guests. This week he has Gail Lichtenstein and Jake Greider of Some Magical Animal. Some Magical Album that just put out one of the best albums of the year. It’s going to be downright magical.
Other Details: Don’t let the HEAT get you down, come to Rockbar for another installment of “In The Round” showcasing Local AZ Musicians playing their original music, or music that has inspired them to play!

When & Where: Wednesday, August 3rd, 8pm at Pho Cao

August in Stereo at 9pm
Dirty Sunset at 10pm

When & Where: Wednesday, August 3rd, 7pm at Crescent Ballroom
Reasons To Attend: Here it is, one of the biggest surprise/hotly anticipated album releases of the year. Maybe, it wasn’t that big of a surprise, I mean Andy kept hinting about it pretty early on. Nevertheless Accidentally is finally here and it’s time to get weird on a Wednesday night in August and celebrate. With support from Treasure Mammal, dent, and Lai, you know it’s going to start weird and stay weird all night long. Unless you’re categorically opposed to fun, you may want to be at Crescent Ballroom Wednesday night.

When & Where: Wednesday, August 3rd, 8pm at The Rebel Lounge
Reasons To Attend: I mention this show solely because Strange Lot is one of the best and the brightest. That said I would take heed of their cryptic facebook post in reference to this evening: “This is our last show till October! We hope to have brand new things to share during our break but till then come see us one last time before we hibernate in the studio for dayss.” Well, it’s not really that cryptic, actually. Point is, see them now or wait until October. Also they are recording!!!

When & Where: Thursday, August 4th, 8pm at The Lost Leaf
Reasons To Attend: So Avery used to be fantastic and I’ve missed them since the day they said goodbye, two years ago this month. That said, they are reuniting for one night to say goodbye to The Riveras who are now calling it quits. So it’s kind of a bittersweet deal on both of those bands, but a necessity to attend if you’ve ever liked either. To counter the mixed feelings of that combo there is the brilliant indie pop of Good Friends Great Enemies and Nanami Ozone. It will all balance out and you’ll be happy in the end.
Other Details: Come see the last show ever for the The Riveras, and a reunion show byAvery who are getting back together for one night to help see us off! We’re alos really excited that the amazing Good Friends Great Enemies andNanami Ozone have been added to the bill. This will definitely be a special night. We’ll see you all there! Good Friends Great Enemies 10:00-11:00

When & Where: Friday, August 5th, 8pm at The Rebel Lounge
Reasons To Attend: Dogbreth is releasing their highly anticipated Second Home and they’re throwing a party to celebrate. The support of Cereal Milk, Red Tank! and Hiccups is unreal. If you haven’t heard Red Tank!’s new album, you really need to spin that one as soon as you can. I would suggest the same as soon as you get your hands on Second Home.

When & Where: Friday, August 5th, 9pm at Rip’s Ale & Cocktails
Reasons To Attend: If memory serves, the last time I was at Rip’s it was for a Steel Cranes show, or not. I do know I’ve seen and met Steel Cranes before and they are amazing. The Lonesome Wilderness are some of my live favorites and the sounds from their new record they’ve been slipping into sets is stunning. Maybe Paper Foxes? They’re on the flier, but not in the event and I didn’t feel like asking CJ. I wish I had described Bad Neighbors as “Indie spoken word rock ‘n’ rollers” because that’s pretty apt and succinct. Anyway, this is going to be a magnificent night and it might just get me to Rip’s for the first time in far too long.
Other Details: Please come join us as we throw down with this wonderfully eclectic spread of musical savvy and celebrate the release of Steel Cranes’ new album, Tango!

The Lonesome Wilderness
The Lonesome Wilderness is a Phoenix-based rock band comprised of sex-panther Joe Golfen, his time-traveling brother Paul, rocknrolla Andrea Custer, Sir Danny P., Esquire and Baron Brian Weis. They originally drew their sound from surf, punk and 1960s influences, but while their backs were turned, some southwestern dust seeped under the door.

Steel Cranes
“Tracy Shapiro and Amanda Schukle’s two-woman rock assault has more in common with the Melvins or the Black Keys: the slo-mo heaviness of a 2,000-pound pendulum, as much grit as an abandoned highway, and a fearless sense of rock ‘n’ roll.” – MTV Buzzworthy

“They shred, but they’re not frantic. Their sound lacks any pretense whatsoever, offering raw, relentless power instead.” – Bitch Magazine

Bad Neighbors
Indie spoken word rock ‘n’ rollers

When & Where: Friday, August 5th, 9pm at Chopper John’s
Reasons To Attend: This is guaranteed to be a cool evening. Carol Pacey & The Honey Shakers are working up a new record and they always put on a show at 110%, Black Rabbits are a fantastic match with that and they have some guests from Down Under. Should be a great time!
Other Details: Please join Carol Pacey & the Honey Shakers and Black Rabbits as we welcome The Stanleys, rocking in from Perth, Australia to Chopper Johns!!!!

When & Where: Friday, August 5th, 9pm at Shady Park

Shady Park is great when it’s not rained out, it looks like we’ll be good this week. Dirty Sunset is opening and they are one of my new favorite things, The Woodworks are ALWAYS amazing, just caught them last week at Yucca and I’m ready for more. To top it all off, Sara Robinson with her full band will finish the evening in fine style.
Other Details: Join us for a night of some of the valley’s favorite music, including the soulful soundscapes of Sara Robinson, the “thrash-folk” stylings of The Woodworks and the psychedelic-folk grooves of Dirty Sunset.
