What’s Going Ahhhn…

You know it’s a good week when you are selecting from over two dozen shows, versus just over a dozen a few weeks ago. I am certain I will get to add more shows as the week progresses and they are announced or the ones without flyers post flyers. Either way this is a stunning showcase of local talent at nearly every available venue in town. With no less than three record release shows, it’s also a chance to get your fresh tunes flowing to escort you out of Summer. Even this Sunday has four show to choose from, seriously, this week is non stop entertainment from beginning to end.

When & Where: Tuesday, August 16th, 8:30 pm at The Rogue Bar
Reasons To Attend: This may actually be the most perfect lineup of the Citrus Clouds residency, though every week has been pretty fantastic. Opening with the easy American rock of Manic Monkeys, then the one man genious of i.am.holgram, then the angular guitar work of the post-punk darlings Soft Deadlines and finishing with shoegazers Citrus Clouds themselves. The them is Margaritaville oddly enough, so channel your inner Jimmy Buffett and have a blast.
Other Details:  Come out & hear the magical debut of Joel’s Banjo!! Manic Monkeys are gonna do at least 3-4 songs with the Banjo!! They kick of the night early like 845pm

Reasons To Attend: Wednesday is an oddly slammed night in the valley for great shows this week, if you’re looking for some indie rock bliss on the East Side, look no further than 51 West, because this lineup is banging. I just checked out Sol Drop last week and they are totally legit, you should know Instructions and Troubled Minds, I didn’t know Second Go, but I checked them out, because they keep great company and they sound like they are right up my alley, and they are pretty fun.
Other Details: Come hang out on this (WIN)sday night! Can’t go wrong with this fun punky line-up featuring some of Arizona’s most dancey rock. Send Flagstaff’s Sol Drop off on tour up the West Coast by buying their new exclusive CD (unreleased until September 2nd). Can’t wait to see you! Doors @ 7:00-Music @ 7:30 $7!!

When & Where: Wednesday, August 17th, 7pm at The Rebel Lounge
Reasons To Attend: This show is unbelievable for a Wednesday. I mean, this is like a Friday level show in the middle of the week. It’s literally stacked with local talent and then there’s Civil Youth who are visiting from Philadelphia. This show is worth every dime and I cannot recommend Jane N’ The Jungle, Alien Atmosphere, New Chums, and IAMWE enough, add to that the alternative stylings of Civil Youth fresh off of a gig opening for twenty one pilots and you cannot lose.

Reasons To Attend: Let it be said that Wednesday’s are never easy. Here’s another great show on this stacked night throughout the valley. This show has the singer/songwriting talents of Beau Nicholas, the vintage style rock’n'roll of Please and the amazing sounds of The Sink or Swim all for free at one of my favorite restaurants in town. Great food and great drinks can only be made better by great music, and there is a lot of it packed into this lineup.
Other Details: Pho Cao presents

When & Where: Thursday, August 18th, 7pm at Crescent Ballroom
Reasons To Attend: I wasn’t aware that Luxxe was even a local band when I saw them perform last Spring. It was only after looking up some of their tracks did I make that discovery. Nevertheless, their set was fantastic enough to prompt me to do some research, so I’m going to assume they’re going to blow your minds at Crescent Ballroom this Thursday, pluse DAISY is phenomenal, now I need to research Rival Coast and Rio Wiley.
Other Details: The lineup is set to include…
Rival Coast
Rio Wiley

Reasons To Attend: Jay Allan & The Uncommon Good are uncommonly good at what they do and here is an entire two hour show set up where you can enjoy their sound with the entire family, or you can get their early for happy hour, get loaded and enjoy it all by yourself. I’m sure there are more options than that, but this should be a pretty amazing and unusual night.

When & Where: Friday, August 19th, 9pm at Shady Park
Reasons To Attend: The Friday’s at Shady Park are turning out to be seriously great. This is another in the series and it features four up and coming acts in the valley, including Sedan Sedan, Broken Girls From Affluent Backgrounds, The Old Storm and FITS. If you haven’t seen FITS in a bit, get your head checked and catch them in the act. Sedan Sedan has a lot of power backing them and I can’t wait to see what they deliver live. The Old Storm always puts on a great show and Broken Girls From Affluent Backgrounds has to be the best name of any local band presently.
Other Details: Join us next Friday for another great night of music, the start of a new semester for ASU and the end of the 2016 Olympics at Shady Park Tempe. When & Where: Friday, August 19th, 9:30pm at Rip’s Ale & Cocktails
Reasons To Attend: Well, if nothing else, this get’s my nod for favorite flyer for the week, possibly the entire Summer. The Christian Family are releasing their vinyl debut and they’ve got Freaks of Nature and Man Hands joining them. This is something of a local indie rock dream lineup and a fantastic excuse to get ripped at Rip’s.

Man Hands 10:15ish, Family 11:15ish, Freaks 12:15ish

When & Where: Friday, August 19th, 8pm at Last Exit Live
Reasons To Attend: I’m not entirely sure if this will Korbe Canida with her band or solo and I’m not sure it matters with a voice like that. Relative newcomers The Runner-Up will be joining them as well as The Crawford Brothers from Australia.
Other Details: Korbe is joined by Australian rockers The Crawford Brothers as well as local up and comers The Runner-Up for a night of indie music at Last Exit Live! $10, doors open at 8, show starts at 9!

When & Where: Saturday, August 20th, 9pm at Pho Cao
Reasons To Attend: If you’re staying on the East side on Saturday, I would center your plans around Pho Cao for the evenings entertainment. Missouri’s After Nations just released their new album The Bearing Point and would love to share it with you since they’re in town and they’ve got The Woodworks, The Psychedelephants and Larkspurs joining them from the local front. This should be an amazing show while you fill up on Pho. I know it doesn’t rhyme, but it did in my head.
Other Details: After Nations is coming back to Arizona to play with The Woodworks again. Joining them will be The Psychedelephants and Larkspurs
“Clearly influenced by great post rock artists like Mogwai and The Mars Volta, After Nations is a fire tornado of sound.” ~ Tentacle Ears (San Diego, CA)

“(The Woodworks) new album, Unhealthy Decisions is their most fully realized project yet, and it serves as their statement of caoalescence-not only as a band, but as a force in the local scene..” -Java Magazine
21+, $5

When & Where: Saturday, August 20, 10 pm at Valley Bar
Reasons To Attend: It’s been far too long since Mouse Powell threw down on a great local stage, so this Saturday at Valley Bar is a pretty special event. Add to that Rubedo and Hollow Point Vigils and this show will be all you hoped it could be. It starts unusually late at Valley Bar for a Saturday, so I’m going to assume it’s going to run a little further into the night than most of the shows there.
Other Details: Universatile Music Presents:
Mouse Powell
Hollow Point Vigils
FREE in the Music Hall
*This event is 21+

When & Where: Sunday, August 21st, 7pm at Cardiff Giant Tattoo, PHX
Reasons To Attend: Three of the finest bands in all of Phoenix playing a Tattoo parlor with Sailor Poon. Leave it to the likes of Wolvves, Red Tank! and Bacchus to put this kind of stacked lineup into a most unusual location. I love the idea of it, I’ll be interested to see how it turns out.
Other Details: A Special Sunday night showcase featuring a few of our favorite PHX bands + a performance by Austin, Texas outfit, SAILOR POON. This will be the first show at a new PHX venue.

If you’ve never heard of Courtney Marie Andrews you may need to do some research on the local scene and figure out why she was once THE vocal darling of the valley before relocating to the Northwest.

When & Where: Sunday August 21, 7pm at Crescent Ballroom
Reasons To Attend: I have no reference to Puff Puff Beer, though I think the name is hilarious. But I do know Jane N’ The Jungle, Field Trippa and Talent Scout and the strength of that lineup alone will probably get me to this Sunday night show. I haven’t seen Talent Scout in ages, but I am always blown away when I do, so they get my “novelty” pick for this show, since I don’t know when I’ll see them on a bill again.
Other Details: Band Details below…
Jane N’ The Jungle
Puff Puff Beer
Field Tripp
Talent Scout
Doors 7:00 // $5 *This event is 21+

When & Where: Sunday, August 21st, 8pm at The Rogue Bar
Reasons To Attend: The Redemptions are playing a gig, that’ reason to celebrate on it’s own. They also happen to be opening up for Nina Diaz, singer/guitarist for Girl in a Coma. She’s out exploring a solo journey and we are lucky enough to be a stop along the way.
Other Details: No further details at this time.

When & Where: Monday, August 22nd, 7pm at Valley Bar
Reasons To Attend: While it is a Birthday celebration for Tina Estes, it’s also a celebration of some of the finest female voices in the Valley. Seriously, Tina Estes, Camille Sledge, and Holly Pyle? If I accomplish nothing else next Monday, I hope it’s that I can make it to this show, because it’s going to be the best of the best on a Monday.
Other Details: Per the Birthday Girl herself: “I’m celebrating my big 3-0 doing the thing I love the most!! Please come out and help me live it up with live, organic music! And since it’s my party and I can sing what I want to– we’re having a LAURYN HILL TRIBUTE mixed in with some dope originals!!!

I wanted to share the stage with only the most talented female-fronted bands I know! It is my privelege and distinct honor to celebrate with the likes of Camille Sledge of Phoenix Afrobeat Orchestra AND Holly Pyle of House of Stairs. #whorunstheworld #betteractlikeyouknow

YOU DON’T WANNA MISS THIS! Come out for amazing music, positive vibes and FUN! Valley Bar is a really cool spot with a dope sound system and authentic ambience!”
