What’s Going Ahhhn…

Letting the dust settle from the holiday a bit, but not for too long before this week get’s crazy. We leave may and launch into the June inferno, only able to celebrate at night with live local music as our soundtrack. It’s really not a bad way to be. There will be more shows added as we head into the weekend I’m sure, but for right now, this is the damn impressive lineup we’ve got working.

When & Where: Wednesday, May 31st, 8pm at Pho Cao
Reasons To Attend: Someone asked me recently why I was so high on Paiting Fences and I said, “Have you heard them?” They gave a blank stare and walked away, I think their answer would have been “No.” Seriously, they’ve got an album and an EP under their belt now and both are freaking brilliant. I clearly need to check out the other two bands on this mid-week lineup.

When & Where: Thursday, June 1st, 7pm at The Rebel Lounge
Reasons To Attend: I had no idea that Scattered Melodies was going to be backing up Josh Bierman for these shenanigans until just now, but that ups the ante on the excitement involved. I like seeing someone I associate as a strong solo musician mixing things up with a band setting. Add to that Heritage Band and The Real Fits and this is a pretty awesome lineup!

When & Where: Friday, June 2nd, 8pm at Shady Park
Reasons To Attend: All I know is that every recent set by Hostile Work Environment has people talking about what a great band they’ve become and all I can do is nod and smile and say, “I know.” I’m going to check out the other artists here, but HWE is worth the cover alone.
Other DetailsPsychedelic MedusaThe Ganderers, and Hostile Work Environment will be the live soundtrack to a stellar night!
5$ cover.

When & Where: Friday, June 2nd, 8pm at Last Exit Live
Reasons To Attend: I’m not sure if we actually have to decide if Fleetwood Mac or Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are better, but it won’t matter because this is going to be a stunning evening featuring Vintage Wednesday, Jane N’ The Jungle and Ruca delivering the Mac attack, while Black Bottom Lighters, The Sink Or Swim and Mind Upside argue for Petty. Even if nobody wins, everyone in the audience wins. Also, I’m pretty sure this isn’t actually a competition, unless they’re competing for how much fun can be had.
Other Details: Six bands face off, doing their best cover versions of all the classic hits you love, to prove once and for all who wins out between Fleetwood Mac, and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers!

When & Where: Friday, June 2nd, 8pm at Time Out Lounge
Reasons To Attend: Here’s another lineup where I only know The Edisons and I totally love The Edisons. If you haven’t seen them and you are Tempe bound, I can’t recommend their live show enough.
Other Details: Bands taking to the Time Out Lounge to trance out and explode.

When & Where: Saturday, June 3rd, 7pm at Unexpected
Reasons To Attend: I cannot recommend this show enough. I’m probably going to go again. Seriously. This was a wonderful evening with talent for miles on the stage and behind the scenes. It was a magical take on an already magical movie. I could not have anticipated how wildly enjoyable and thoroughly engaging the entire performance was last week. I’m still in awe of it now. There are a lot of things to do on Saturday night in Phoenix, but nothing as wonderful as this.
Other Details: Goblins! Fairies! Live Music! Magic! The Bog of Eternal Stench!
Pan Productions presents the live stage musical, The Goblin King’s City, an adaptation of the 1986 film Labyrinth.
From the directors and producers of Rocky Horror at The Firehouse, and A Swimming in the Head, this full stage production includes a large cast and crew of seasoned favorites, along with many new faces. A live, re-imagined version of the score will be brought to life by downtown favorites Jerusafunk, including an original song written and performed by We Are Hologram, the first full band performance by local musician I am Hologram. The show will also include an original song written by Serene Dominic.
The show will feature Chris Del Favero of Jerusafunk and local musical artist Joobs, who will share the role of Jareth the Goblin King, performing on alternating nights.
We will feature Kendra Ruth Martinez as Sarah.
The cast features Jesse Abrahams as Hoggle, Will Jones as Ludo, Alexandra Morfin as Sir Didymus, and Uche Ujania as Merlin/Ambrosias. Puppets for the production are crafted by Adam Bullock.
You can enjoy our provided award winning food vendors, as well as being able to take home a piece of the magic, with art pieces provided by artists from all over the valley.
We are striving to entertain and continue the memories that have influenced so many.
This is an all ages show.

We had a wonderful opening night on May 26 at The Pressroom. We have two more showings on Saturday, June 3, and Friday, June 9, at Unexpected Gallery.
Facebook is making us create separate event pages for each date, so apologies for multiple invites.
The June 3 showing will begin at 7:00pm (door at 6:00), and the June 9 showing at 8:00pm (door at 7:00).
Tickets will be available at the door, or you may buy online at:

When & Where: Saturday, June 3rd, 9pm at Chopper John’s
Reasons To Attend: Um, this is a ridiculously good lineup and I can vouch that every band of the three is a “Don’t Miss” kind of scenario. I’m looking forward to more songs from Parlor Birds, because “Lizzards” is still very much on my mind, The Bittersweet Way have a lot of cool things in the works and Treasurefruit is working on something too–get to know them before all those records come out, right now.
Other Details: This is a free concert at one of Arizona’s most beloved and notorious music venues. Don’t miss (appearing for the first time together) Parlor Birds, The Bittersweet Way and Treasurefruit.

Rock and Roll + Motorcycles = Dangerously fun times.

When & Where: Saturday, June 3rd, 10pm at Filmbar
Reasons To Attend: If you run out of musical enlightenment juice and your wandering around downtown at 10pm Saturday night looking for somewhere to feed your soul, on this occasion I would tell you to get to Filmbar for RPM Orchestra. If I had one band playing in my house to silent movies all the time, it would be RPM Orchestra, but I haven’t figured out how to arrange for that yet. It will probably require wealth.
Other Details: RPM Orchestra provides the film score as the silent classic A TRIP TO MARS screens, during this one-night only event, at FilmBar Phoenix

A Trip To Mars (1918) is the film that marked the beginning of the space opera subgenre of science fiction, in which a group of astronauts embarks on an expedition to Mars, where to their great surprise, they encounter an advanced civilization of peaceful vegetarians.

Told in often startling images and boasting some massive amazing sets, the film was produced during a time when the First World War was showing little sign of ending and, in this respect, cannot fail to impress when seen as a plea for compassion and tolerance.
