  • The Real Fits – “Roadblock” You can’t accuse The Real Fits of resting on their laurels, that’s for sure. Even in the depths of Arizona Summer, when most musicians hit the Dog Day slump for a month or two, this band just keeps churning out single after single. They’re also playing a fair amount of shows–hell, I just caught them last week for a set at Lost Leaf that sounded damn near magical. They just released “Roadblock” this week and it’s a slow burner that begins with nearly a minute of mesmerizing instrumentation, lulling you at first before the guitar...

  • This thing happens every Summer where releases build up and we don’t have an August issue of JAVA Magazine. Ten years ago I welcomed the month off when it would come around, but it was only a few years in that I missed having a twelfth issue and felt like I was trying to catch up with amazing music from the Spring and Summer all Fall, or miss them entirely. So here’s a bit of switch up from the normal Singles Going Steady or Video Round Up, with multi-song releases you have to hear whenever I need to share them....

  • I’m slamming as many shows into this thing as possible, because lately when I make plans the Universe says, no, no, no, just relax or I’ll make you relax. Either way this starts now and goes all the way to next Tuesday to include a couple of shows I wanted to highlight early on next week. I have a lot of writing to unleash this week that I’ve had stored up for a week or two, so hopefully this deluge will make sense in retrospect. It’s a hell of a week for shows, that’s for sure. When & Where: Tuesday,...

  • This is the lean, mean, hungry season here in the Valley of the Sun and there’s a lighter load of shows. I’m going flyer only this week which still has a surprising number of new record releases within it. Either way, there’s a lot of worse ways you can spend the dog days than pursuing the love of live local music. Wednesday, July 12th Thursday, July 13th Friday, July 14th Saturday, July 15th

  • Sorry about missing any Tuesday/Wednesday shows this week, I was taking a bit of holiday myself, I mean I didn’t do anything special, just checked out of local music after seeing three nights of amazing music. Last week I got to see Weird Radicals blow my mind, then Soft Deadlines, Ghost Cat Attack, Danielle Durack and Callie Young give killer performances the next night, then Saturday night was completely lit at Paper Foxes’ pool party with The Stakes, Hostile Work Environment, Mr. UU, The Psychedelephants and more…It was amazing, but the more amazing thing is that kind of thing happens...

  • Paper Foxes are clearly in the pursuit of greatness, at least that’s how it seems to me. There’s a certain pay off to following a band from their inception. When Paper Foxes started they seemed like a spin off of Fairy Bones, featuring two of the latter bands members, but there was no way to balance that with the vision that CJ Jacobson had for the band. Soon he and founding member Patro Gaston recruited Uche Ujania (Mr. UU)  and Jahlani Ujania for a stunning rhythm section. Most recently, they added the last piece of the puzzle to the lineup when Martin...
