Paper Foxes premiere “What Are You Afraid Of?”

Paper Foxes are clearly in the pursuit of greatness, at least that’s how it seems to me. There’s a certain pay off to following a band from their inception. When Paper Foxes started they seemed like a spin off of Fairy Bones, featuring two of the latter bands members, but there was no way to balance that with the vision that CJ Jacobson had for the band. Soon he and founding member Patro Gaston recruited Uche Ujania (Mr. UU)  and Jahlani Ujania for a stunning rhythm section. Most recently, they added the last piece of the puzzle to the lineup when Martin Shaffer (Bad Neighbors/Curiosity Door) joined in the mix. They’ve put out two solid EPs since the Spring of 2015–well, more than solid, they were some of my favorite EPs of the last two years and “What Are You Afraid Of?” is the first taste of their next record to come.

The new single makes its premiere here online today! It’s a further exploration in their death disco, dark wave indie pop fascination. This recedes even further into post-punk territory and sounding less like Interpol and more akin to Chrome with an ever loving touch of Joy Division. There is a noticeable uptick on what’s happening guitar wise and of note, this is their first recording to feature Shaffer. Though he’s been a part of their live show for some time now he finally makes his debut with them here. For all the darkness and the neurotica employed in the song it sure is a danceable number at the heart of it, so while Jacobson sounds like a cross between Peter Murphy and Ian Curtis, the rest of the band is creating a slightly psychedelic pastiche that combines equal parts groove and existential dread. It’s pretty impressive. If this is the tone that is being set for the rest of the record it’s going to be another favorite of mine once more. Like any other band of merit, the more they become themselves, the better they sound and Paper Foxes v3.0 is truly their best incarnation yet. Whether it was clear when they opened for Poptone at Marquee or on their new single, it sure seems like Paper Foxes are going places.

“What Are You Afraid Of”

Let’s lock the doors, before they take me.
The monsters scream. Windows are shaking.
The fear crawls in. Under my skin.
Where is my armor. Is it lost with sin.
What are you afraid of?
What are you afraid of?
What are you afraid of?
What are you afraid of ?

My heart will keep on beating and I will not fear these things
My heart will keep on beating and I will not fear these things

We’re running now, I’m bleeding out,
The lights go down, the darkness falls,
The fascist call, they scream and shout,
So run away away from them
What are you afraid of?
What are you afraid of?
What are you afraid of?
What are you afraid of ?

My heart will keep on beating and I will not fear these things.
