What’s Going Ahhhn…

Been awhile. I needed some downtime and I may take more, but the last couple weeks were literally the “dog days” of Summer and I also have this recent thing where I can’t listen to music. So that’s weird. Anyway, this week is pretty damn spectacular and I’ve included a lot of shows where I only know one band, but lately that’s all it takes before you find yourself loving three new bands in one night. Anyway, let’s check it out…

When & Where: Wednesday, August 9th, 7:30pm at Yucca Tap Room
Reasons To Attend: If you are looking for a way to celebrate the 43rd anniversary of Richard Nixon’s resignation and have no ideas, this is the show for you. I have no idea what Acceptable Losses will bring to the table, but the power of Rainbow Fucker, The Bittersweet Way and Ancient Egypt bring to the table and it’s fucking magic. I haven’t been to a show in a couple weeks, but this may get me out on a Wednesday night. No one knows when they’re playing yet, that will weigh on my decision.
Other Details: Band details below…
- Albuquerque, NM -

When & Where: Thursday, August 10th, 7:30pm at Yucca Tap Room
Reasons To Attend: Not sure what’s up with Yucca this week, but their laying down my kind of sounds. First of all, if I go to Yucca two nights in a row, this may cause a rift in time and space. It could happen, it should happen. This lineup is an amazing collection of rare acts to be caught stage and rarefied air to breathe. Check out the bandcamps if you have no clue what I’m talking about, you’ll be saying the same.
Other Details: Free admission. 21+.

When & Where: Friday, August 11th, 8pm at Last Exit Live
Reasons To Attend: The Edisons released their debut on the edge of last year and it was one of my faves in the end. Enough that I had to go out and see them somewhat immediately. They’re releasing their new EP on Friday and they’ve invited one of the most exciting lineups I’ve seen in a while for bands beloved by music geeks. Broken Girls From Affluent Backgrounds, Soft Deadlines, Sun System and Celebration Guns will be joining in the action. Stunning.
Other Details: Set times below…
8:00-8:30 Broken Girls From Affluent Backgrounds
8:45-9:15 Soft Deadlines
9:30-10:00 Sun System
10:15-11:00 The Edisons
11:15-12:00 Celebration Guns

When & Where: Friday, August 11th, 7:30pm at Valley Bar
Reasons To Attend: Here’s one of the shows where I have no idea about most of the bands, but I can assure you that Future Soul is amazing. This seems like the kind of night that’s right for uplifting vibes and music that moves your soul.
Other Details: WILD EARTH is releasing their 2nd full length album ‘HOLY FOOLS’ w/ special guests LOVKN and FUTURE SOUL

When & Where: Friday, August 11th, 8pm at Pho Cao

Vintage Wednesday will be unveiling their new lineup, Ghost Cat Attack will be saying goodbye to founding member Lou Perez, What’s The Big Idea will blow your mind with some of the best local jazz and Tessa Karrys will kick the entire evening off. Every moment is gold.

When & Where: Friday, August 11th, 9pm at Chopper John’s
Reasons To Attend: Joannah Zamora and The Bittersweet Way are scheduled to change your world on Friday night. If you haven’t noticed The Bittersweet Way are playing a ton of shows lately, almost like they’re building up to something. Anyway, I’m not sure if anyone else is joining the bill but have witnessed performances by both acts, it’s not really necessary.
Other Details: Get your music on at Chopper John’s for some soul and rock and roll and ambient pop rock to keep you singing all night!
Cheap drinks, friendly bartenders, and a great crowd.
Show starts at 9 PM! See you there!

When & Where: Saturday, August 12th, 9pm
Reasons To Attend: If you’re having the worst Summer ever, blame Anthony Fama, that’s what I do. Then again, I blame him for everything. Still he titled this record months ago and it’s all his fault in retrospect. Either way this show is downright obscene and brilliant all at once. The lineup is amazing with The Apached providing authentic Sonoran Surf music, Phantom Party purportedly doing their last “surf” show (they are evolving) and holy hell is that Darkness Dear Boy I see? Oh, also The Redemptions have this record they want to force on you, but in an awkward way.
Other Details: Dance the Sads Away at The Redemptions’ “the Worst. Summer. Ever.” CD Release! A classy, dignified beach party…at a dive bar.
Arrive in your best beach attire! Water balloon and snow ball fights! BYOP (bring your own pool)Don’t forget to bring a towel :)

Civil Youth is back in town and supporting JNTJ as well as the local brilliance of Alien Atmosphere. This is a solid plan for your Saturday night!

When & Where: Saturday, August 12th, 8pm at Yucca Tap Room
Reasons To Attend: I can’t account for Coastlands in from Portland, but I love the name. Holy Fawn is a ridiculous maelstrom live, Moon Eat Stars may be the best local post-rock band going and from everything I heard just now, someone should have told me about Ghost Island before right now. Stunning lineup indeed.
