  • I guess I’m a man of few words this week (not really), but the description below from the Facebook event for this show does all my work for me. Let’s face it, Psyko Steve is something of a local  treasure and on  this occasion he has put together some of our most amazing local talent and put together an  event where they can do something revolutionary. I’m not even sure that this has ever been achieved yet in a concert setting. My true hope is that this entire event is both recorded in sound and vision, then I hope it...

  • They say a picture is worth a thousand words, they say every picture tells a story, they say a lot of things about images being able to move people more than writing. For once, and perhaps the only time, I’m going to allow the following images sink in without much addition of my own admonitions. I really don’t need to say much that I haven’t said HERE, so I won’t, except that I am so fucking excited about the Grand Opening of Last Exit Live that I can hardly contain myself. If you don’t understand my joy, please refer to...

  • Quick on the heels of the release of their magnificent album The Elephant In The Room early last summer, Banana Gun has released an  EP of their live efforts since that time. With the combination of live tracks that include both originals and covers, as well as one sacred studio track that previews a bit of love from the next full length album, this is one hell of a package. Throughout all six performances on this modest EP, Banana Gun shows that they are an amazing band filled with infinite possibilities and a definite stylistic sound, they are defining themselves,...

  • Just when you think things couldn’t get better for the Arizona music scene you turn the corner and something new pops right up at you. In this case it’s a bit of history coming back on many levels. The popular Tempe music venue Last Exit, which was open from 2003-2009, is reopening courtesy of its original owner Brannon Kleinlein in a new downtown Phoenix location.  The former Tempe location featured the best in local acts along with many national touring acts such as Zac Brown Band, Gin Blossoms, Candlebox, Dramarama, The Format, Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers, Cross Canadian Ragweed,...

  • This week on SoundsAroundTown.Net, I will be spotlighting what is, probably one of the most important events to occur in downtown Phoenix. While the McDowel Mountain Music Festival has carried with it a fair amount of clout throughout the years for garnering amazing acts and combining  them with local brilliance, I’m not sure it’s ever been done this well before. Both keen ears and eyes created this schedule of wonder and though there are a few other things going on this weekend, they all lay in the shadow of this amazing festival. The lineup is below and it speaks for...

  • While many of the bands we know and love, as well as many of our friends are in Austin celebrating SXSW, there are still a lot of opportunities to see some great live music–especially from bands you may not be entirely familiar with. Turns out you can send over twenty bands out from Phoenix and we still have a ton more to catch in the act of performing their hearts out. Amazingly enough, this weekend is packed from beginning to end. Friday, March  15, 2013 The Sail Inn-Tempe: International Pop Overthrow The first night of the International Pop Overthrow is...

  • Many years ago, when I was coming to terms with my musical illness and my compulsion to write about everything I heard that turned me on, I was just starting to get published outside the realm of my college newspaper, underground  publications and philosophy magazines. When I began writing, I had never intended to become a music journalist of any sort–I was way into politics and social issues, but as time would have it, the two loves of my life became entwined and  when my writing started to concern the music I loved there was no stopping it. It also...

  • Every now and then you run into something that just stops you dead in your tracks—sometimes for many reasons, sometimes because you can’t figure it out and sometimes because you just love it plain and true. The first time I saw The Cold Desert, I was literally stopped cold in my tracks—in a jaw dropping, mind blown sort of way. Never have I witnessed a better combination of pure rock’n’roll, deeply rich Americana and for lack of a better term, gospel. By all rights, that combination should turn me off straight away—but it’s too good, it sounds too amazing and...

  • I spend most of my time writing about music trapped between a few worlds, these worlds are as follows: A) Indie Rock-Essentially, an alternative rock option in which the presentation is decidedly experimental, possibly lo-fi, perhaps slightly neurotic, but all in all, seems to reflect a quirky outsiders look–yeah, the term is kind of meaningless, but it covers a lot of territory; B) Power Pop-A term originally coined by Pete Townshend in a 1967 interview to describe the music of The Who, this usually refers to hook heavy, brilliant music that recalls the music of the British Invasion that was...
