  • Is this the week where it all begins? The never ending fury of amazing shows that fill every venue every night? Yeah, this might just be this week. I even had to roll into next week to cover all the happenings on Monday, because I knew I wouldn’t do it on Saturday night. Anyway, this is a stunning week with far too many choices. I keep looking at the roster and I can’t make a decision about where I’ll be on any of these nights. It’s a bit overwhelming. Just have a look at all that’s going on… When &...

  • Well holy hell, just look at the rest of the week below. I should have written this yesterday because there were three or four killer shows on Tuesday, but I wasn’t feeling that great and sleep took a priority. Nevertheless, this week is just action packed from here until Sunday, the next week is much the same, it’s all just unreasonably good. Check it out and get some live local music love in your ears soon… When & Where: Wednesday, July 22nd 8pm at The Rebel Lounge Reasons to Attend: This really should be a weekend show, but on a...

  • So the story goes that I wrote a wonderful version of this article on Tuesday night. I was feeling particularly ambitious that evening and had already written my New Times piece. As I added the last flyer to it, my computer crashed, and upon reboot I discovered that WordPress hadn’t saved a draft after the first five words. I was crestfallen to say the least and it was two in the morning. Wednesday I had an amazing show to catch at Pho Cao and last night I was still resentful toward my laptop. Still there are some great shows I...

  • Due to a combination of illness, writers block and a generally terrible time at my day job, I wrote not a damn thing last week. It was a pretty good week and I have a few regrets about not promoting some of the shows, especially the ones I attended. There really is no use in crying over spilt milk, though and I had a fabulous time regardless. This week is jam packed once more and the bonus is that it’s not squeezed into one holiday event! Nope, it’s spread throughout the week in a lovely fashion, though, I’m not going...

  • Time slips by easily, caught in the hustle and bustle of life and music and shows and all else. It seemed to me that the campaign to get play the documentary off the ground just began, but alas, we are inside the last two days for the Kickstarter campaign for this amazing project. I wanted to spend some time talking about this, but I can’t do it much better than Matty Steinkamp has done on the Kickstarter page itself. I will say this, the importance of getting children interested in music (and all the arts, really) at an early age...

  • It’s probably old news by now, but Leonardo DiCapricorn is no more. Luckily, they did not disband before playing a final show (which was amazing) and leaving us with a parting gift in the form of the Friends, Anemones EP.  It happens to be a perfect send off to an all too short lived band that lit up the scene with their intrinsic mania for less than two years. It starts with “B-Day Song” which is an insane rant about both confusion and birthdays. “Bummer Daze” is pretty much the star of the show and easily the perfect AZ single...

  • So a lot of people have noticed that there has been nothing going on with SoundsAroundTown for the last three months. I spent the first two months of the year summarizing the great music of 2014 and then took a hiatus. It wasn’t something I really meant to do, it just sort of happened. First of all, I have a nifty column called “Right Hear, Right Now” over at the Phoenix New Times music blog Up On the Sun, that comes out a few times a month and features five new songs from local artists. You can find the entire...

  • I’ve listened to nearly fifty EPs and these were some difficult choices, I must admit. I loved everything I wrote about last year, but one of the qualifiers for this category and the categories that follow is “Could I sing a song from the EP without thinking about it?” the answer to all of the 22 below was yes, or I could at least hum the tune. All but my absolute favorite is found here, but that gets a post all its own, because it deserves it as my favorite above and beyond all else from 2014. So, without further...

  • Yes, I still have plenty of favorites to go through on these pages from last year. Due to bouts of the flu and other such nonsense my schedule on getting these out has been delayed, but all the lists are locked in my head and must be released. I spent too much time thinking about them. This list has a definite order and it’s based purely on how much joy they brought me, how much I loved the song and the production value. Sometimes one of these values would trump the other. I couldn’t decide on ten so I went...

  • Let’s face it, I go to a lot of shows and in 2014, I was actually trying to cut back. Truth is, going to shows is what keeps me writing and I find out about more new bands that way, by talking to musicians than on using any social media platform. It’s in the moment and you’re drinking and smoking and everyone has a new favorite band, then I write them down and check them out. At some point I know I said I was going to cut down on the amount of shows I would see, but I think...
