Videos Around Town Archive

  • Mixing new videos for some older songs and some brand new songs with videos in tow. Unlike the last roundup, which was basically catching up on two months of video releases, this is ten videos all from the last few weeks. I highly recommend checking out all of these bands outside of the video realm by checking in to their records and live shows.   Playboy Manbaby – “Cheap Wine” I like that the series of videos coming out of Playboy Manbaby’s monumental Don’t Let It Be seem to pay homage to the comedic value of cross dressing in the...

  • This here video round up is the result of getting a lot of cool new videos for songs I’ve already written about in one form or another, as well as a couple brand new videos for brand new songs. Also, it seems that everone and their mother are releasing new videos this Thursday, so I wanted to get this out before that new deluge began. Enjoy. The Sink or Swim – “Arizona” As 2017 progresses and we start to slither our way into the warmer months of the year, “Arizona” by The Sink or Swim feels more anthemic with each...

  • I have never hidden my affection and adoration for Fairy Bones from the first moment I saw them. Subsequently, I think I’ve written about ever release and moment of their budding career as one of the most compelling rock acts in Phoenix. Today, Fairy Bones is releasing their video for “Banshee”, a truly great single from their full length album debut Dramabot, released earlier this year. For a complete run down on the album you can check out the track by track review found HERE. It is one album released so far this year that I still find myself listening...

  • Yes, I still have plenty of favorites to go through on these pages from last year. Due to bouts of the flu and other such nonsense my schedule on getting these out has been delayed, but all the lists are locked in my head and must be released. I spent too much time thinking about them. This list has a definite order and it’s based purely on how much joy they brought me, how much I loved the song and the production value. Sometimes one of these values would trump the other. I couldn’t decide on ten so I went...

  • Taking a break from the favorites of last year, the amount of new videos coming out have been piling up and I thought they deserved some attention. I think this is going to be a big year for video, even bigger than last year and I imagine this kind of thing will appear more often here. I tend to ignore videos, because I am more about the music, but if it’s a way to get peoples attention and tune into some great local artists, well, then all the better. KONGOS – “I Want To Know” After living with this album...

  • You might know Miller James a bit better as J. Miller from Bad Lucy or even as Gram Miller which was the first solo moniker he used amidst the break up of Bad Lucy. Do not be confused by the changing names for the guy with the golden throat that looks the same (I once asked him if he had a brother named Gram after seeing pictures online), he is one and the same. I was saddened by the loss of Bad Lucy, because I thought they really could get somewhere, but I always felt that this was the guy...

  • It is somewhat ironic that while I sit here writing about the fantastic new video Michael Alexander sent me from his band Emby Alexander, they will be hitting the stage at The Lost Leaf–which is where I saw them last. Curiously enough, it was about that night where I was, according to Alexander, possibly the first one to write about a crazy crowd involved sonic experiment that blew my mind. I may have even coined the term for it, but I’m not sure about that. In early September, I wrote: “They even had an audience experiment we’ll call “The Emby...

  • Sundressed is a band I have greatly enjoyed watching come into their own in the last couple years. This especially has to do with the growing confidence and songwriting ability of their leader and singer Trevor Hedges. It also seems that with each passing release they become more and more the band I envisioned they would when I first heard them. They also seem to let loose and rock the hell out a lot more as time goes on and that is the side I really like to see, because they do it so well. Don’t get me wrong, Sundressed...

  • So, someone asked me recently if I realized that I wrote about Fairy Bones roughly once a week. I thought about it for a moment and said,”Yes, I believe that’s true.” They asked me why to which I replied “Because they make it possible for me to do so. Well, to prove them wrong technically, I’m writing about them twice this week as I mentioned them in “What’s Going Ahhhn…” earlier this week. Yes, they are clearly one of my favorite local bands and I’m excited as hell about their forthcoming full length debut Dramabot coming out early next year...

  • I’ve been meaning to write about all three of these videos for a bit and I’m just now getting around to it. I tend to listen to music a whole lot more often than watch videos for it, but these are the videos that have caught my attention in the past month or so.  They also happen to be from three of my favorite local bands: Fairy Bones, Emby Alexander, and Captain Squeegee. So with out further ado, let us get to the vids. Fairy Bones – “Waiting” “Waiting” is the first of two new singles released to promote Fairy...
