  • This is a hell of a week sneaking up on us and it is jam packed with amazing shows every night. Once we get to Thursday it becomes nearly as overwhelming as the Sun and continues into the weekend. Also, if we’re pretty much booking shows on Thursday like it’s the new Friday night, we need to get someone to fix the work week. Someone should check with our robot overlords on that, reason with the machines and argue that we’ll spend more money on our three day weekend if we get the same pay for four. Anyway, this week...

  • El West – “Rose Letter A” El West arrested the senses with their debut EP last year and made one of the impressive debuts in the scene. “Rose Letter A” is their first song released this year as the harbinger of the next record to come and it’s nice to hear this crew playing around with their sound a bit. It’s a bit of a mid tempo rocker that relies far more on the ringing guitar work of Thomas Brenneman and less on the operatic vocals of Bryant Powell, add the flawless rhythm section of Ricky Powell and Marty Welker...

  • Going old school on this one. No commentary. No spoon feeding. Just flyers and shows. The best flyers, the best shows and maybe some that are neither, but these are the infographic tales of where you should seek aural solace for the week. THURSDAY, May 18, 2017 This is kind of a flyer. It’s at the Rogue Bar in case you were wondering. FRIDAY, May 19th, 2017 SATURDAY, May 20th, 2017 SUNDAY, May 21st, 2017

  • In 2009 I had been covering local music for over a year and was discovering a few gems here and there. In the pages of JAVA Magazine I had covered Colorstore, The Love Me Nots, Greenwich, and a couple other locals, but the scene was different back then. In my interviews I’d ask what other local bands the artists like and their recommendations were few and far between. All of that seemed to change in September 2009 when the first When In AZ… compilation was released. Maybe it was the idea of 55 local artists covering one another or maybe...

  • Getting this out early this week, because I have a ridiculous amount of writing and amazing projects to work on over the next few days. As always, I will most assuredly add more shows as I know about them, but this runs straight into next Monday as it is, so there is no lack of live, local entertainment to be had. I drive most of this from facebook events, but sometimes it seems to mess about with what I’ve put down as going or interested. There may be a major show or two missing below, but they’ll be added. It’s...

  • This here video round up is the result of getting a lot of cool new videos for songs I’ve already written about in one form or another, as well as a couple brand new videos for brand new songs. Also, it seems that everone and their mother are releasing new videos this Thursday, so I wanted to get this out before that new deluge began. Enjoy. The Sink or Swim – “Arizona” As 2017 progresses and we start to slither our way into the warmer months of the year, “Arizona” by The Sink or Swim feels more anthemic with each...

  • What’s going on? Jumping Jesus on a pogo stick, Stuart, what’s not going on?!?!? This week is jam packed with amazing music every where, every night from here to well into next week. We even have a holiday of sorts on Friday to make the music drunker and more enticing. Plus, it’s May, the last moments to stand in the sun without feeling like you might die–though I know some of you are already there. Either way, it’s fine with me, because this week rocks! When & Where: Wednesday, May 3rd, 7:30pm at The Rebel Lounge Reasons To Attend: Ummm…this...

  • Cait Brennan – “Bad At Apologies” Can we just talk about Cait Brennan for a moment? I mean her debut album had me reeling last year, it felt like 1970′s AM Rock comfort food for my soul through every track. Debutante was a showcase for her as an artist, but especially as a songwriter. Flash forward through a decade of anyone else’s life experience, compressed into a rollicking year in her life and she presents her audience with Third. Don’t worry, her second album is coming, after this one, it’s quite a story. That said, Third is a landmark achievement,...

  • How hard is it to make a flyer? Or some customized image for the event you’re playing, or the poster the venue made for you that looks nice and tight and has all the details on it? I mean, I watch people make this kind of thing in five minutes, maybe ten if they’re picky about the font or the background image. I mean, if you don’t want some striking visual to yank peoples attention, I get it, keeping it all on the low down. Anyway enough of that, here’s the lineup for the shows that look awesome and have...

  • It blows my mind that I’ve known The Cherry Bluestorms since the International Pop Overthrow Festival of 2013. I’ve stayed in touch ever since the first time I saw them at the Sail Inn and reviewed their full length record Bad Penny Opera when they returned to Tempe for a set at Long Wong’s during Fairy Bones FBOM at Long Wong’s. How is that for a ton of local music scene history and oft-forgotten lore? They are currently working on completing their third album, which I am eagerly anticipating, because their classicist sense of psychedelic pop and rock drawn from...
