Party Gardens – Dance Flora EP
Posted on July 2, 2014 | No CommentsThough it’s only a couple weeks into Summer technically speaking, Party Gardens already released THE EP of the season a month ago. If you haven’t heard of Party Gardens it’s because they used to be called Yellow Minute, moved to LA and changed their name (a trend I’m not sure if they or KNESSET started and which Future Loves Past has followed). Since Sean Brennan surrounded himself with some of the best parts of What Laura Says and formed a full band, I have been waiting eagerly for this release and there is no disappointment found here in any capacity. ... -
Genre – Scrape Your Voices On The Stars EP
Posted on May 29, 2014 | 1 CommentIt was nearly three years ago that Genre blew my mind. I was super excited about them and then they disappeared. I have no idea what happened, I know they put out an EP that I failed to cover, but I somehow stayed in touch with Zac Markey and Corey Gomez, thankfully. If there was one band that I hoped would return to the scene it was Genre. And they have, thankfully. Scrape Your Voices On The Stars is one of the most exciting releases available, period. I’m not clinging to hyperbole here. This is six songs of pure brilliance... -
The Prowling Kind – Tennessee
Posted on April 23, 2014 | No CommentsThe Prowling Kind was one of my favorite debuts of last year, along with the likes of Celebration Guns, Twin Ponies, Northern Hustle and of course Fairy Bones, this was one band that rocked my world in 2013–unlike the other bands listed, I unfortunately never got to write about their album at the time. I blame it on the fact that JAVA Magazine has no August issue and by the time I did get their album it was long past its release, so I’m fixing that now, because I love their debut Tennessee. It’s not like I didn’t know the... -
This Is Family: Pratt-Hustle-Hutson at Crescent Ballroom
Posted on March 4, 2014 | No CommentsIf there is one mid-week show that you have to see this week it’s this one. The lineup is fantastic, there promises to be lots of free goodies and all the artists will be playing new material. So the story goes, in May of 2013 Christian Lee Hutson, Northern Hustle and Dylan Pratt played their first show together at Fort Wanderlust creating a triumphant threesome of love and the world’s largest entirely male family. I caught this family some months later at a Habanero Collective house party. I had never heard of Christian Lee Hutson and I was blown away,... -
Bacchus and The Demon Sluts: Live At Crescent Ballroom
Posted on February 18, 2014 | No CommentsSo last week I wrote “Bacchus and The Demon Sluts … is currently my ‘Favorite Band I’ve Never Seen or Heard’. I loved Naked Pizza (and apparently if I have enough scratch put together, I still can), so I can’t wait to find out what Austin Rickert is doing in this new out fit with his endless creativity, energy and vision.” Little did I know that as I was writing those very words they were posting a live album to bandcamp. I didn’t know about it until Robert from Fairy Bones messaged me to check it out, for some reason... -
VideosAroundTown: The Prowling Kind “Melted Together”
Posted on February 10, 2014 | 1 CommentThe Prowling Kind was one of the best debut acts of 2013, their blistering blend of rock, blues and Americana was some of the finest music I witnessed live on several occasions last year. Sadly, I never got to review their brilliant debut album Tennessee, I never picked up a physical copy and all I had was a soundcloud link that I couldn’t download, I kept meaning to pick it up, but alas never got around to it somehow. I’ll probably correct this soon and write a belated review, because it was one of my favorite albums of last year and... -
Whisperlights Final Show
Posted on January 10, 2014 | No CommentsI suppose one of life’s hardest lessons is that all things must pass. We’ve learned that around this town recently, either with the passing of friends or with the dissolution of some of our favorite bands. One of the bands I hold in the highest esteem is finally calling it quits after nearly five years of aural bliss that I can recall. At least they are doing it in style and having one final send off at Crescent Ballroom this Saturday, joined by There Is Danger and Dry River Yacht Club. That lineup alone should make Crescent your destination for...
