Doctor Bones Exit With A Parting Gift
Posted on February 24, 2014 | No Comments2013 was a rough year for Doctor Bones. Last May Doctor Bones sacked lead singer Anthony Fama and found Zach West, which is the equivalent of kicking Iggy Pop out of your band and replacing him with Brandon Flowers. They then went into hiding and into the studio to record their second EP. After a startlingly great one song debut at Future Loves Past’s Lushfest, this final version of Doctor Bones lasted exactly three shows this past fall and until last Thursday there was no evidence that anything would come of it. I went to the first show and I... -
ALL AZ TMI RADIO SHOWCASE for SXSW at Sail Inn Tonight!
Posted on December 12, 2012 | No CommentsEarlier this year Arizona musicians made a definite impact at the SXSW Music Festival in Austin, TX. Largely through the efforts or echocloud.tv and the many benefit shows they held to get the artists there, some of the bands they helped send there got national press attention for their attendance. This year there are a few collective groups heading to this nexus of indie music in the only hip city of Lone Star State. One of these groups is the locally rocking radio crew surrounding The Morning Infidelity show on KWSS 106.7, which has become, in my world and in... -
STEM Family Night at Crescent Ballroom
Posted on September 18, 2012 | No CommentsIt’s no secret that this year I’ve been paying a fair amount of attention to the production work of Curtis Grippe and the work he’s been doing at STEM Recording. His work has really come to shine in 2012 and with releases to his credit by Japhy’s Descent, Banana Gun and Doctor Bones (all who have appeared in these pages) his work has joined the ranks of other local production geniuses such as Jalipaz and Bob Hoag. I don’t in anyway think this is an exaggeration and if anyone examines my writings over the course of the last four years,... -
Playboy Manbaby Lets Loose!!!
Posted on August 28, 2012 | 1 CommentIt was a rum soaked night when I first witnessed Playboy Manbaby immediately upon walking in to Long Wong’s and I stood there stunned, mouth agape for a good half hour not sure if I could believe what I was seeing. I was with a friend who doesn’t get out to the music scene very often and he was stunned as well and kept prodding me with questions like, “Who the hell was that? Can you find out who that was? Have you ever seen those guys? Will you find out who they were?” That was the night I met... -
Doctor Bones’ Numbers
Posted on February 29, 2012 | 1 CommentThey Are Doctor Bones and this is Numbers I first became aware of Doctor Bones around the time the ninth or tenth person told me I would love them early last fall, it was around that same time I started noticing the stickers all around town that said “Who Is Doctor Bones?” So I had to find out for myself and it turns out everyone was right, I love them. First of all, their live shows establish them as an ungodly force to be reckoned with, between the commanding presence and quirky vocals of Anthony Fama, the vocals, violin and... -
11.11.11 The Question Is…Where Will You Be?
Posted on November 8, 2011 | 2 CommentsThere are some evenings where, for the local music enthusiast, life is simply not fair. This often occurs on Friday and Saturday nights, but lately it’s been happening on Thursdays, Wednesdays and random Tuesdays. This Friday, November 11, 2011-yes, 11.11.11–is such a night where most people I know wish they could be in two places at once. Especially this Friday. There are two shows going on in this metro area of such astonishing power that I have to talk, at length, about them both–and it’s not like they are near each other, not like you could bounce back and forth between venues...
