Emby Alexander Archive

  • It’s hard to believe it’s only been a little over a year since Emby Alexander released their masterful first full length album Frontispiece. A record that was one of my absolute favorites of 2014 and something I still listen to on a near weekly basis. I was a little skeptical when Michael Alexander let me know that they would be releasing their sophomore effort  on June 1st. It seemed a little quick on the heels of Frontispiece, though I certainly admired the ambition and drive. I guess I was worried, for some strange reason that there might be an issue...

  • I probably should have done this in the reverse order. I wanted to give the following nine bands honorable mentions, because they made life great last year. Instead, I announced Field Tripp as the favorite instead of mentioning the others and there are still more honorable mentions I could think of (like 20 or 30 more), but these were bands that I either continually saw again and again or would go way the hell out of my way to see in 2014. I chose them in the most rational sense I made list straight off the top of my head,...

  • It is somewhat ironic that while I sit here writing about the fantastic new video Michael Alexander sent me from his band Emby Alexander, they will be hitting the stage at The Lost Leaf–which is where I saw them last. Curiously enough, it was about that night where I was, according to Alexander, possibly the first one to write about a crazy crowd involved sonic experiment that blew my mind. I may have even coined the term for it, but I’m not sure about that. In early September, I wrote: “They even had an audience experiment we’ll call “The Emby...

  • So this is an odd tale to tell here, but these were literally sounds around town and there is some music involved. I decided that I wanted to take the light rail to Phoenix to see the Emby Alexander/B.O.T.S/Genre show at The Lost Leaf. I used to do this all the time and I loved it, of course my Jeep was also incapacitated at that time. I wanted to do this for two reasons: 1) The ticket would be cheaper than the gas it took to get there and I’m broke and 2) There was a fairly serious threat of...

  • There is a bizarre formula to the quirky chamber pop that Emby Alexander produces. They are at once composing a nervous aesthetic that will amplify your anxiety while soothing your mindset, they prey on your mental illness and entice you to love them, they abuse your senses, but hold you tight long into the night. They have developed a unique ideal for their own brand of indie rock, composed of influences that evoke nightmares, orgasms, love affairs and obsessions, with a fierce attention to art and compositional genius, they approach their songs like pocket symphonies and deliver them like power...

  • While there are more than enough albums and EPs keeping me busy these days, I have to say that this is shaping up to be a Summer of singles. This hasn’t happened in a couple of years where the bands go single crazy and its easy to assemble your soundtrack to Summer, but I guess it’s one of those years and I have no complaints in any capacity about that. Here are four new singles that cover a wide spectrum of sound and I’m digging all of them. Here’s to more singles all Summer long! Jane Joyce – “Kill This...

  • Well, hell it’s been a damned rocky road to get to 2014. I feel like last year I was trucking along full speed and killing it with unbreakable momentum. The fact that I haven’t posted in over a month proves that I hit a roadblock. I apologize for ducking out for an unplanned hiatus. Hey, I’m only one guy–I don’t have a staff and only occasionally do I have other contributors, mostly this is a one man show. A show I intend to get back on the road. The main problem for me began in October when there was a...

  • I had actually forgotten for a moment how much I love Midnight Vitals, I know, it’s a terrible thing to say, but it was only for a moment. So when I got an advance copy of their brand new EP last Spring, I immediately had to dig out their Time To Go EP—something I missed out writing on, because I was about a year too late and got to re-immerse myself in their special brand of pure power pop with synthesizer flourishes.  Well, as much as I liked their debut, in listening to equal matches of that and their new...
