  • There are a lot of great things going on this weekend, probably too many in fact and most of them seem to be squeezed into Saturday. Not only is Saturday Record Store Day, a celebration of independent record stores across the globe in which music geeks like myself and nearly everyone I know go on a bender buying up one day exclusive releases to add further fodder to our treasure trove of secret sounds, guilty pleasures and aural indulgences, which should be enough for any day, it also happens to be Phochella! For the last three years Beef Vegan has...

  • I had actually forgotten for a moment how much I love Midnight Vitals, I know, it’s a terrible thing to say, but it was only for a moment. So when I got an advance copy of their brand new EP last Spring, I immediately had to dig out their Time To Go EP—something I missed out writing on, because I was about a year too late and got to re-immerse myself in their special brand of pure power pop with synthesizer flourishes.  Well, as much as I liked their debut, in listening to equal matches of that and their new...

  • There have been a lot of great artistic debuts in the Valley of the Sun this year, hell, I could probably do a top ten list right now. Then again, I could do a top ten list of bands that have abandoned the valley or broken up or joined the Federal witness relocation program…so the world of music gives and takes in balance I suppose. One of my favorite debuts of 2013 is, without a doubt, Fairy Bones. One of four bands born from the ashes of Born Loser and The Hangers On  (Sister Lip, Naked Pizza and Head are...

  • It came with some surprise last month when I heard during the same evening that one of my favorite emerging groups, All My Friends, would be systematically releasing their second record and subsequently breaking up…possibly in the same night. I was dashed, mostly because I had just watch them slay everyone else in the lineup that evening and was truly glad I had brought spare jeans. Mostly, though I was dashed because I knew they had spent countless hours, days, weeks recording their new release and they appeared to be at the top of their game and gaining some ground....

  • It’s a Thurday night at the start of April and it turns out that two of the most amazing bands in town have teamed together to present a collective album release show. It seems unlikely, but electronic rock geniuses Factories will hold their release party for Together, alongside Ladylike releasing their eponymous debut. Both will be supported in their endeavors by Chasing Kings and in order to entice you to the entire splendid event, the cover will be only $5!  This means you can save money for drinks, burritos or perhaps you will think wisely and invest your money into the...

  • I had heard murmurings about Factories for nearly a year. Their producer Jalipaz had mentioned them quite a bit, even though they are not a part of the Black Cactus roster, everyone from that crew talked very excitably about them. I had been told that Underwater Getdown was history, but not to worry, because Factories was even better.  It wasn’t until last May after about six months of hearing these whispers in the wind that I got to see the proof in the pudding for myself at Peachcake’s EP release party at the Rhythm Room. It was at that point...

  • It seems May is the month to release amazing records here in the Valley of the Sun and the hits just keep coming. In fact record releases are seemingly endless throughout the rest of the summer. On Thursday, May 12th there was magic in the air at the Rhythm Room to celebrate the release of Peachcake’s new five track EP This Wasn’t Our Plan. Not only is the Rhythm Room just about the perfect place to hold a release party (the sound is always great at the Rhythm Room, at least for the last few years), but the bands choice of...
