  • It came with some surprise last month when I heard during the same evening that one of my favorite emerging groups, All My Friends, would be systematically releasing their second record and subsequently breaking up…possibly in the same night. I was dashed, mostly because I had just watch them slay everyone else in the lineup that evening and was truly glad I had brought spare jeans. Mostly, though I was dashed because I knew they had spent countless hours, days, weeks recording their new release and they appeared to be at the top of their game and gaining some ground....

  • Ladies and gentlemen, we have a very special presentation today. Though it has been a year since this footage was documented, I have waited with eager anticipation for this twelve minutes of film to be released. My former intern and Sounds Around Town partner in crime Sara Dalton has been instrumental in a number of things concerning this blog over the last year for which I can never thank her enough. One of the things we talked about early on was editing the footage and making a short film from her time with Future Loves Past on the road and...

  • Many years ago, when I was coming to terms with my musical illness and my compulsion to write about everything I heard that turned me on, I was just starting to get published outside the realm of my college newspaper, underground  publications and philosophy magazines. When I began writing, I had never intended to become a music journalist of any sort–I was way into politics and social issues, but as time would have it, the two loves of my life became entwined and  when my writing started to concern the music I loved there was no stopping it. It also...

  • For the entire time I’ve known them, I  have wondered (in much the same way I spend nights staring up at the stars) what the debut album would from Future Loves Past would hold in store for its loyal listeners. This past Spring musical architect and late night home studio whiz Eric Palmer began sending me tracks that he had just completed at 4am and I was stunned—this raised the ante even  more, but I had no idea what it could all be possibly be leading toward. Then some weeks ago, bassist Sean Wintrow made it clear when he sent...

  • Future Loves Past have definitely been one of the more fascinating bands to watch evolve over the last two years of their official existence. They have also been a band whose recent decisions and new directions have been more surprising than ever. Here is a band who essentially had an entire albums worth of songs that would drive a crowd absolutely insane for more than an hour at every gig they played. Granted four of these songs were already released on their debut EP, but still they had added enough like-minded songs  to their repertoire (“Seekers” for instance) that it seemed...

  • Every now and then there is a venue residency in town that has a non-stop, mindblowing lineup all month long. This time around it’s Wooden Indian hosting every Friday Night in  April at Long Wong’s Firehouse for their ever successful FBOM series. I’ve been an avid fan of Wooden Indian since I saw them play in the dark at the ante-chamber of the Icehouse at last year’s What Laura Says release party and try to see them every chance I can get. Wooden Indian is one of the rising local bands, still on  the fringe, intent on finding new sounds...

  • There are times where you know a show is going to be good. There are other times when you approach a show with a sense of trepidation. I approached the Second Annual Beatles Tribute night with a sense of both, and I walked away clean, assuaged of any fears, happy to be alive. I had found out long after the fact about last years event and happened upon some of Sun Ghost’s videos and The Vanjacks recordings and I couldn’t believe I had missed it. Once I found out that it was happening again, I knew it was going to be...

  • Future Loves Past.  In the timespan of a year they have gone from being a band that made me smirk with the potential I saw in them to a full on revolution of sight, sound and mindblowing kinetic ferocity–they have exceeded the potential I saw by many lengths and no matter how many times I see them live I am moved by them, physically prompted to dance and left in amazement as the hazy daze they create dissipates with the final tones of their set still reverberating in the air. They have a way of controlling the vibe in the...

  • There are some evenings where, for the local music enthusiast, life is simply not fair. This often occurs on Friday and Saturday nights, but lately it’s been happening on Thursdays, Wednesdays and random Tuesdays. This Friday, November 11, 2011-yes, 11.11.11–is such a night where most people I know wish they could be in two places at once. Especially this Friday. There are two shows going on in this metro area of such astonishing power that I have to talk, at length, about them both–and it’s not like they are near each other, not like you could bounce back and forth between venues...

  • For the second year in a row, the Rogue will be throwing a celebration and homage to one of the greatest, if not the greatest, pop band of all time, The Beatles.  For anyone, like me, that missed last years show, you’ve been living in regret since the videos of the evening showed up (for instance Sun Ghost’s version of “Don’t Let Me Down” above) and some bands leaked nearly entire albums of their performances (if you haven’t heard The Vanjeatles Live at The Rogue, you are missing out on something). This year is going to beat last year into the...
