  • So this is an odd tale to tell here, but these were literally sounds around town and there is some music involved. I decided that I wanted to take the light rail to Phoenix to see the Emby Alexander/B.O.T.S/Genre show at The Lost Leaf. I used to do this all the time and I loved it, of course my Jeep was also incapacitated at that time. I wanted to do this for two reasons: 1) The ticket would be cheaper than the gas it took to get there and I’m broke and 2) There was a fairly serious threat of...

  • There is a bizarre formula to the quirky chamber pop that Emby Alexander produces. They are at once composing a nervous aesthetic that will amplify your anxiety while soothing your mindset, they prey on your mental illness and entice you to love them, they abuse your senses, but hold you tight long into the night. They have developed a unique ideal for their own brand of indie rock, composed of influences that evoke nightmares, orgasms, love affairs and obsessions, with a fierce attention to art and compositional genius, they approach their songs like pocket symphonies and deliver them like power...

  • Alright, there is at least one great show every night here for the next six nights in a row and that’s what this is all about. I actually meant to include Tuesday night because there was a killer show at the Yucca with my faves Twin Ponies and Celebration Guns, but yesterdays article took too long to write and I really should have had my shit together on Sunday, but I didn’t. Nevertheless, here are the gorgeous details of all that’s going down in this town over the next six nights. There may well be more going on than this,...

  • So, this is probably not the best way to start off an article that lauds the joy found in a few recent local shows, but the one thing that all three had in common was an uncommonly low attendance. Maybe I’m just being drawn to shows that are off the beaten path, maybe I’m taking chances on seeing bands that people haven’t even heard of yet, maybe I like to go to shows that no one else is covering or will attend because I generally hate people and I don’t really want to be social. Maybe it’s all of these...

  • It was nearly three years ago that Genre blew my mind. I was super excited about them and then they disappeared. I have no idea what happened, I know they put out an EP that I failed  to cover, but I somehow stayed in touch with Zac Markey and Corey Gomez, thankfully. If there  was one band that I hoped would return to the scene it was Genre. And they have, thankfully.  Scrape Your Voices On The Stars is one of the most exciting releases available, period. I’m not clinging to hyperbole here. This is six songs of pure brilliance...

  • I haven’t been going to as many shows as I used to, but I’ve been trying to hit up the ones that offer new fodder to my coffer as much as possible. This past weekend I hit back to back shows on Friday and Saturday that were both truly great experiences. One thing I noticed is that I learn more about new bands I’d be interested in by investing a few hours each weekend night at shows just through great conversation with likeminded wonderful people in between sets than I do spending an entire day on the net. I am certainly...

  • It seems May is the month to release amazing records here in the Valley of the Sun and the hits just keep coming. In fact record releases are seemingly endless throughout the rest of the summer. On Thursday, May 12th there was magic in the air at the Rhythm Room to celebrate the release of Peachcake’s new five track EP This Wasn’t Our Plan. Not only is the Rhythm Room just about the perfect place to hold a release party (the sound is always great at the Rhythm Room, at least for the last few years), but the bands choice of...
