  • Some people seem to think I go out every night, which I don’t–some weeks I don’t go out at all. Others think that it would be my dream to go see bands every night, which it’s not–it often takes every fiber of my soul to get out and go see the shows I do catch and if I went out every night I would get seriously overloaded, hell I’m overloaded as it is. Lately, I’ve been either going out to specifically catch new talent, get new records (or cassettes), or see a show that I know is going to be...

  • Well, this is a jam packed weekend kids, no doubt about it. There is so much action going on its unbelievable and I’m not just talking about what will be happening in peoples pants, rather, what will be happening at venues across the valley. The kicker for me is that my beloved Jeepster is in the garage and I will be damn lucky if I surface at all this weekend. Thus I encourage everyone to make the most of this incredible list of shows that I will most probably miss. Although, I must admit when I see a lineup like...

  • In addition to the great EPs and Albums that are starting to flow through the Arizona scene, singles are starting to pop up wildly. Many of them are teasers and previews of albums and EPs soon to be released and I’ve selected four that have been released this month from bands I adore. The range from intentionally lo-fi to expertly produced and their styles are all over the place. Some of the newer singles have gone straight to video and I’ve already covered those (“Mirror, Mirror” by Banana Gun and “Melted Together” by The Prowling Kind), but I realized enough...

  • Well, hell it’s been a damned rocky road to get to 2014. I feel like last year I was trucking along full speed and killing it with unbreakable momentum. The fact that I haven’t posted in over a month proves that I hit a roadblock. I apologize for ducking out for an unplanned hiatus. Hey, I’m only one guy–I don’t have a staff and only occasionally do I have other contributors, mostly this is a one man show. A show I intend to get back on the road. The main problem for me began in October when there was a...

  • I’ve never had a chance to write about Darkness Dear Boy before, I’ve mentioned them in articles and on the  radio, but I’ve never gotten to really write about my love for this rock’n’roll band. And its Autumn and that’s where my head is at. They somehow completely flew under my radar when they released Brand New Carrot On A String in April of 2010—but at that time I was slightly overwhelmed at just how great the local music scene had become in the first two years I had been writing about it. This was totally my bad, that album...

  • I have to admit that I feel completely privileged to live in a metropolitan area where I can go out three to six nights of the week and experience pure, live, musical bliss presented by the most talented people I’ve ever had the honor of knowing. Maybe this should be called “What A Whirlwind Week!” for that reason, because the weekend started on  Tuesday.  That being said, due to the pace of my musical adventures I totally missed out on Sunday due to a scorching fever and an aching in my bones. I will, however, be back at it tonight...

  • There is something intrinsically unique about the sound of Andrew Duncan Brown.  His self title debut album is a haunting set of songs that will settle deep down in your soul and reside there, gnawing at you from the inside. With a voice that is harrowing, warm and frail all at once, this is a sound that seeps all around you, crawls from within your ears to your mind and invades the recesses of your consciousness. The opener of “Auto Pilot” is practically devastating in its delivery, yet it sets the stage for the rest of the album in a...

  • It was a rum soaked night when I first witnessed Playboy Manbaby immediately upon walking in to Long Wong’s and I stood there stunned, mouth agape for a good half hour not sure if I could believe what I was seeing. I was with a friend who doesn’t get out to the music scene very often and he was stunned as well and kept prodding me with questions like, “Who the hell was that? Can you find out who that was? Have you ever seen those guys? Will you find out who they were?” That was the night I met...

  • Music For A Darkened Room And An Open Mind estas diluculo’s Long Awaited Release Party It’s become more and more rare these days when artists record an album for the sake of the album, meaning they want the album to be heard in its entirety, straight through, uninterrupted. So often in these days of MP3s and iPod shuffled realities we only attend to songs as listeners and artists then attend to that very same attention span. There are some bands, some artists and yes, some listeners still out there that remember the commitment of an album, the joy of spending...

  • Every now and then there is a venue residency in town that has a non-stop, mindblowing lineup all month long. This time around it’s Wooden Indian hosting every Friday Night in  April at Long Wong’s Firehouse for their ever successful FBOM series. I’ve been an avid fan of Wooden Indian since I saw them play in the dark at the ante-chamber of the Icehouse at last year’s What Laura Says release party and try to see them every chance I can get. Wooden Indian is one of the rising local bands, still on  the fringe, intent on finding new sounds...
