  • Future Loves Past.  In the timespan of a year they have gone from being a band that made me smirk with the potential I saw in them to a full on revolution of sight, sound and mindblowing kinetic ferocity–they have exceeded the potential I saw by many lengths and no matter how many times I see them live I am moved by them, physically prompted to dance and left in amazement as the hazy daze they create dissipates with the final tones of their set still reverberating in the air. They have a way of controlling the vibe in the...

  • You have to respect a band who puts out one of the greatest debut albums this area has seen in quite a while, who has played endless live shows enough to develop a very large and devout following, who have become one of the most respected bands in the valley and who has somehow also remained sweet, humble and gracious throughout this banner breakout year. You also have to respect the fact that they found time amidst this madness to put out a double A-Sided single before the years end of two completely new songs. That’s Mergence for you. I...

  • There are some evenings where, for the local music enthusiast, life is simply not fair. This often occurs on Friday and Saturday nights, but lately it’s been happening on Thursdays, Wednesdays and random Tuesdays. This Friday, November 11, 2011-yes, 11.11.11–is such a night where most people I know wish they could be in two places at once. Especially this Friday. There are two shows going on in this metro area of such astonishing power that I have to talk, at length, about them both–and it’s not like they are near each other, not like you could bounce back and forth between venues...

If nothing else, the lineup is amazing, once more What Laura Says has assembled and amazing evening featuring Mergence, Wizards Of Time, Benny Marchant, Wooden Indian, The Technicolors and St. Ranger. • I think this might be the perfect anthem for Independence Day. A great song by what is, in fact a great American band–yes Mergence has provided the soundtrack for my weekend, because it’s that kind of album–Those Vibrant Young People Are Dead is just pure and simply great rock’n'roll from “Dynamite & Kerosene” to “At The Salt” all of it is essential and amazing. “Me & My Family Vs. The Robots” is something of a centrally located masterpiece within the first half of the album, brilliantly contoured, composed, and in truth it stands out, in the long run, as one...

  • It seems to me the best way to kick of a four day Holiday weekend is with a little “Dynamite & Kerosene” by Mergence to get things rocking. It strikes me, that no matter how many times I hear this song it still sounds fresh and new, it still get’s my heart racing and my mind spinning. The lead off track from one of the best albums of the year Those Vibrant Young People Are Dead, still gets many spins a week from this fan, because so far it just it doesn’t get old. So I’m starting off the second...

  • Leave it to What Laura Says to throw what was possibly the greatest party of the summer, before summer even technically began. Having had a couple months to fully digest their new four song EP, TALK (Read the full review here), I had been looking forward to the release party for quite some time. I was not, however, prepared for just what a mindblowing event it would be. First of all, they chose what is possibly the greatest venue to hold this event, both aesthetically and sonically speaking, The Icehouse in downtown Phoenix. Secondly, the lineup for the evening couldn’t...

This is the director’s cut.) Right from the start, Mergence’s debut album explodes with a resounding “HA!”, then the piano, guitars and drums crash in at once, while lead singer Adam Bruce sings, “Focus all your energy on one thing at a time, trade in all your enemies for just this one good time, we sail, sail away.” Indeed they will and for the next 39 minutes of...
