  • Alright, there is at least one great show every night here for the next six nights in a row and that’s what this is all about. I actually meant to include Tuesday night because there was a killer show at the Yucca with my faves Twin Ponies and Celebration Guns, but yesterdays article took too long to write and I really should have had my shit together on Sunday, but I didn’t. Nevertheless, here are the gorgeous details of all that’s going down in this town over the next six nights. There may well be more going on than this,...

  • So, this is probably not the best way to start off an article that lauds the joy found in a few recent local shows, but the one thing that all three had in common was an uncommonly low attendance. Maybe I’m just being drawn to shows that are off the beaten path, maybe I’m taking chances on seeing bands that people haven’t even heard of yet, maybe I like to go to shows that no one else is covering or will attend because I generally hate people and I don’t really want to be social. Maybe it’s all of these...

  • In addition to the great EPs and Albums that are starting to flow through the Arizona scene, singles are starting to pop up wildly. Many of them are teasers and previews of albums and EPs soon to be released and I’ve selected four that have been released this month from bands I adore. The range from intentionally lo-fi to expertly produced and their styles are all over the place. Some of the newer singles have gone straight to video and I’ve already covered those (“Mirror, Mirror” by Banana Gun and “Melted Together” by The Prowling Kind), but I realized enough...

  •   I’m always on the hunt for new and exciting sounds–always. A lot of times I  stumble over bands that are good and they remind me of other bands that are good, sometimes I stumble over bands that are great and remind me of no one I’ve ever heard before. I like the latter kind of stumbling. This week I had that luck, through a weird series of synchronous events through which I was first told about Bad Neighbors first by Dan Tripp, then a few other fine folks, then had the luck to catch their five song set at the...

  • I haven’t been going to as many shows as I used to, but I’ve been trying to hit up the ones that offer new fodder to my coffer as much as possible. This past weekend I hit back to back shows on Friday and Saturday that were both truly great experiences. One thing I noticed is that I learn more about new bands I’d be interested in by investing a few hours each weekend night at shows just through great conversation with likeminded wonderful people in between sets than I do spending an entire day on the net. I am certainly...

  • Well, hell it’s been a damned rocky road to get to 2014. I feel like last year I was trucking along full speed and killing it with unbreakable momentum. The fact that I haven’t posted in over a month proves that I hit a roadblock. I apologize for ducking out for an unplanned hiatus. Hey, I’m only one guy–I don’t have a staff and only occasionally do I have other contributors, mostly this is a one man show. A show I intend to get back on the road. The main problem for me began in October when there was a...

  • One of my favorite debut bands of 2013 is, without a doubt, Fairy Bones. One of four bands born from the ashes of Born Loser and The Hangers On, Fairy Bones is a dynamite four piece who released their debut on October 15th. First off, singer Chelsey Louise is a goddamned firecracker on stage and the band supports her histrionics and indulgences with smiles, grins and a furious garage groove.  Until last month, I wasn’t entirely sure how their performance would play out on record, but I had nothing to worry about—the recordings have come out with enough visceral energy,...

  • I have to admit that I feel completely privileged to live in a metropolitan area where I can go out three to six nights of the week and experience pure, live, musical bliss presented by the most talented people I’ve ever had the honor of knowing. Maybe this should be called “What A Whirlwind Week!” for that reason, because the weekend started on  Tuesday.  That being said, due to the pace of my musical adventures I totally missed out on Sunday due to a scorching fever and an aching in my bones. I will, however, be back at it tonight...

  • If you are unaware, for the last few months SoundsAroundTown has been making a weekly break into radio courtesy of The Driving With Gass show, courtesy of Kevin Gassman, Cindy Love and everyone at KWSS 106.7FM (soon to be 93.9FM!!!). In a  one off meeting with Gassman and Love last fall where we both happened to be at the same broadcast at the same time they cordially invited me to join them on their radio show each Wednesday to spotlight local happenings throughout the weekend and spread the word of the sounds that were, indeed, around town. This has become...
