Banana Gun Celebrates Five Years With A Show And A New EP!
Posted on December 2, 2014 | No CommentsIt’s a little difficult to wrap my head around the fact that Banana Gun is celebrating their five year anniversary this week. Granted, I’ve been writing about local music for nearly seven years, but it seemed that when things just got started rolling around here Banana Gun was a part of the new emerging scene. Now, half a decade later, they are one of the top local bands and seasoned veterans at that. Across five years they have released one studio EP (more of a mini-album/short full album), two brilliant full lengths and a live EP–all to critical praise, including... -
ShowsAroundTown: Every Other Night…
Posted on February 27, 2014 | 1 CommentSome people seem to think I go out every night, which I don’t–some weeks I don’t go out at all. Others think that it would be my dream to go see bands every night, which it’s not–it often takes every fiber of my soul to get out and go see the shows I do catch and if I went out every night I would get seriously overloaded, hell I’m overloaded as it is. Lately, I’ve been either going out to specifically catch new talent, get new records (or cassettes), or see a show that I know is going to be... -

Sister Lip Debut EP
Posted on September 12, 2013 | No CommentsSister Lip refer to themselves as a Jazzy Blues Rock band and across four songs in just under fifteen minutes they live up to that description of musical fusion. It actually comes off as a crazy blend to be unusual enough to stand out. Turns out the band is four girls from Mesa, who purport to like to rock hard and their jazzy blues persuasion is definitely tempered by a fierce interest in indie rock, at times they even tread in to psychedelia as their songs seem to lose control, only to turn on a dime and recollect themselves with... -
Shows Around Town: The First Half of May
Posted on May 16, 2013 | 2 CommentsAs some of you may or may not know, I became freed of my day job on May 1st–the news of which I greeted with, at worst, ambivalence and at best a fair amount of happiness. Honestly, I’ve been missing out on a lot of killer shows during the week and the opportunity to spend a few weeks checking out what’s happening between Sunday and Friday, kind of thrilled me. This time has not gone wasted, though, I’ve not spent every night at a show–I’ve certainly tried to make the most of it. I would like to say that first... -
The Echo Bombs-Awkward Summer
Posted on May 10, 2013 | No CommentsRising from the ashes of The Analog Society, The Echo Bombs appear to have emerged triumphant with an engaging sound that is both unique yet right in line with some growing local trends. In the last year or so there has been a wonderful emerging group of fierce, electrically charged pop/rock bands throughout this scene fronted by amazing women of vision. In my mind The Echo Bombs join the ranks of Zero Zero, Russian Arms and Optics, Therapist, PALMS, The Madera Strand, Factories, Fairy Bones and a few others where a brilliant feminine vision is combined with amazing gutsy music...
