  • Many years ago, when I was coming to terms with my musical illness and my compulsion to write about everything I heard that turned me on, I was just starting to get published outside the realm of my college newspaper, underground  publications and philosophy magazines. When I began writing, I had never intended to become a music journalist of any sort–I was way into politics and social issues, but as time would have it, the two loves of my life became entwined and  when my writing started to concern the music I loved there was no stopping it. It also...

  • Throughout the summer, I found myself looking forward to Autumnal events–not for any lack of amazing events during those heated days and sweltering nights, not even in the least. No, it was because as the summer progressed, more and more events began to stack up in store for September, October, November and well into the New Year–critical, amazing, mindblowing events. Events like the Tempe Rockstar Gold Festival this past weekend at Sail Inn, the upcoming Apache Lake Music Festival or Kongos homecoming show. Another one of these events I’ve been looking forward to for months is the album release show...

  • If you have enjoyed the music of Tempe in the last couple of years, and specifically in the last year, the presence, music and art of one Deon Doughty has certainly come to your attention. Aside from being a musician himself, Doughty is a magnificent artist and has been spending a lot of time over the last year documenting the musicians he admires most in brilliant paintings that are literally done on a gold base layer. If you don’t know Deon or ever had the pleasure of encountering him painting a portrait of an artist as they play, you may...

  • On March 24th Tugboat played their final show at the Rogue, putting a close on six years of amazing music and great live shows.  The show that night was amazing and Tugboat has never been better and, not to be undone completely in their final move, they released their last record, the eponymously titled mini-album Tugboat. The release of this eight track EP is the epitome of a band ending their time together on a high note, as it is the best thing they’ve ever released. In honesty, their previous recordings wowed me, in the way that it would wow...

  • Throughout the last few years in the Tempe music scene, many, many bands have come and gone or broken up or become different bands, but amidst all the change and growth Japhy’s Descent have remained, they have persevered to become a staple and have now emerged as a rock’n’roll force to be reckoned with. This isn’t hyperbole either, I’ve known people who would walk out of Japhy’s shows years ago who now I see at the front of the stage, raving and drooling. I thought they were crazy when they told me during the release of their EP that they...

  • There are some evenings where, for the local music enthusiast, life is simply not fair. This often occurs on Friday and Saturday nights, but lately it’s been happening on Thursdays, Wednesdays and random Tuesdays. This Friday, November 11, 2011-yes, 11.11.11–is such a night where most people I know wish they could be in two places at once. Especially this Friday. There are two shows going on in this metro area of such astonishing power that I have to talk, at length, about them both–and it’s not like they are near each other, not like you could bounce back and forth between venues...

  • It seems lately that on any given Friday or Saturday night, you want to be at three different venues at the same time–the local music is that good and there are enough venues coming around to supporting it that the choices are getting more and more difficult to make. Friday, May 6th was one of those nights–there were amazing shows everywhere that night, but I hedged my bets and wagered on the one I thought was most apt to blow my mind and from what I understand in the aftermath, I made the right decision. My decision process usually works...
