  • I have been actually meaning to write this for over a week, but then there was Summer Ends Music Festival and I wanted to hightlight some of the local bands that were going to play and I did and then they didn’t, for the most part. Nevertheless, I’ve had five unique single releases come across my plate as of late that I thought deserved some attention, so enjoy the reviews and the listening opportunities below. EL-”Doomsayer” I’m not sure why more people aren’t talking about EL, other than Hot Rock Supajoint who turned me onto this rock combo. This is...

  • Well, hell it’s been a damned rocky road to get to 2014. I feel like last year I was trucking along full speed and killing it with unbreakable momentum. The fact that I haven’t posted in over a month proves that I hit a roadblock. I apologize for ducking out for an unplanned hiatus. Hey, I’m only one guy–I don’t have a staff and only occasionally do I have other contributors, mostly this is a one man show. A show I intend to get back on the road. The main problem for me began in October when there was a...

  • As some of you may or may not know, I became freed of my day job on May 1st–the news of which I greeted with, at worst, ambivalence and at best a fair amount of happiness. Honestly, I’ve been missing out on a lot of killer shows during the week and the opportunity to spend a few weeks checking out what’s happening between Sunday and Friday, kind of thrilled me. This time has not gone wasted, though, I’ve not spent every night at a show–I’ve certainly tried to make the most of it. I would like to say that first...

  • Wow! That’s all I can say… …I can’t believe it’s been two years, today, since I launched soundsaroundtown.net. It’s been a hell of a ride in two years time. Statistically speaking, I’ve posted 165 articles in that time (two were not authored by me), 93 of them were in the last year, which is amazing since I pretty much took off May, June and July. My hope of hopes, is that in some way, this digital volume of local music adoration has contributed to the well being of the bands and the shows and all else featured here. This whole...

  • Somewhere late last year I was looking for something new, some different  kind of sound around town and this  led to me, literally walking and light railing constantly across Phoenix and Tempe in search of something I simply hadn’t heard or something that was unlike anything else I was witnessing. Around that same time Billy Tegethoff contacted me and let me know about his band The Oxford Coma, he sent me the early tracks for their debut EP and invited to their debut show. The tracks were cool, like nothing else going on, dancing that thin line between heavy alternative and metal–I...

  •   2012 has been an amazing year to have the privilege to write about the music in Arizona. I wasn’t sure if anything would top 2011, but it has–many fold. This year has been a non-stop rollercoaster ride of amazing albums, brilliant EPs, some of the best shows I’ve ever seen, so many new talent has emerged, while a few favorites bid farewell–it’s been a hell of a ride. That being said, I have covered 11 albums in depth, track by track this  year and though it is only the beginning of November, I’m preparing December’s JAVA Magazine music content  now....

  • The Oxford Coma Infrastatic EP Do not be confused by the name, The Oxford Coma is not a Vampire Weekend cover band, not even close in fact. No, The Oxford Coma have a sound that delves into metal at all the right spots, holds to a progressive aesthetic and somehow creates songs that wouldn’t be out of place on alternative radio. On their facebook page they call their style “progressive psych-grunge” which is close to the truth, but doesn’t really touch on what they are that isn’t included in that little descriptor. They made their live debut last month closing...
