The Prowling Kind – Tennessee
Posted on April 23, 2014 | No CommentsThe Prowling Kind was one of my favorite debuts of last year, along with the likes of Celebration Guns, Twin Ponies, Northern Hustle and of course Fairy Bones, this was one band that rocked my world in 2013–unlike the other bands listed, I unfortunately never got to write about their album at the time. I blame it on the fact that JAVA Magazine has no August issue and by the time I did get their album it was long past its release, so I’m fixing that now, because I love their debut Tennessee. It’s not like I didn’t know the... -
ShowsAroundTown: Ree’s Release
Posted on March 24, 2014 | No CommentsEverytime I go to a Ree Boado/Dearspeak release show, it’s something of a magical event and it’s almost always an intimate emotional affair. I also always experience something wonderful and get to hear new music I’ve never heard before. The first solo release she had was the first time I ever heard Ladylike and I’ve been a fan of them ever since. This time around it was celebrating here new EP Out of the Mouth of Caves and it was once again a great evening, this time at the Rhythm Room for a night of storytelling and yes, intimate, emotional... -
Ree Boado-Out of the Mouth of Caves EP
Posted on March 10, 2014 | 1 CommentI have been a fan of Ree Boado since the first moment I heard her heavenly voice and listened to her intelligent though provoking lyricism. I missed out when she was in Art For Starters, but I’ve been following her solo work and her work with Dearspeak faithfully from the start. Her album Pretty Little Flies was one of my favorite albums of 2011 and I honestly can’t believe it’s been that long since her last solo release. I was over the moon happy when she contacted me about releasing a brand new EP this month. Out of the Mouth... -
VideosAroundTown: The Prowling Kind “Melted Together”
Posted on February 10, 2014 | 1 CommentThe Prowling Kind was one of the best debut acts of 2013, their blistering blend of rock, blues and Americana was some of the finest music I witnessed live on several occasions last year. Sadly, I never got to review their brilliant debut album Tennessee, I never picked up a physical copy and all I had was a soundcloud link that I couldn’t download, I kept meaning to pick it up, but alas never got around to it somehow. I’ll probably correct this soon and write a belated review, because it was one of my favorite albums of last year and... -
Shows Around Town: The First Half of May
Posted on May 16, 2013 | 2 CommentsAs some of you may or may not know, I became freed of my day job on May 1st–the news of which I greeted with, at worst, ambivalence and at best a fair amount of happiness. Honestly, I’ve been missing out on a lot of killer shows during the week and the opportunity to spend a few weeks checking out what’s happening between Sunday and Friday, kind of thrilled me. This time has not gone wasted, though, I’ve not spent every night at a show–I’ve certainly tried to make the most of it. I would like to say that first...
