  • I’ve got to admit that I never thought in a million years that I would recommend an album that was recorded by a fourteen year old singer/songwriter. It never even crossed my mind that I would even be interested in what a girl that age could say or play without thinking they had so much more territory to cross, so much more life to do, so much more to realize and maybe find their course of talent. This was until I heard the debut album by Taylor Upsahl.  I actually didn’t realize her youth until reading the description on CDBaby,...

  • I’ve told the story many times before, but I think that once a year it bears repeating. Many years ago, when I was coming to terms with my musical illness and my compulsion to write about everything I heard that turned me on, I was just starting to get published outside the realm of my college newspaper, underground  publications and philosophy magazines. When I began writing, I had never intended to become a music journalist of any sort–I was way into politics and social issues, but as time would have it, the two loves of my life became entwined and ...

  • The first time I ever saw The Madera Strand they played and entire set of Police covers for a Cover The Crescent event, since that time I have watched them grow into their own, memorized their first EP and they have subconsciously become one of my favorite bands to catch live. I say subconsciously, because it snuck up on me and I didn’t notice it until one night I was on the fence about a show when I found out The Madera Strand was playing and that clinched it. This month they release the three song EP Dam Failure which...

  • I  know I’ve complained about the lack of rock’n'roll in this city before, but my complaints stop here. Banana Gun has somehow released one of the most compelling rock records of the entire  year.  Yes, there is something  in the combination of Ian Breslin on Drums, Kevin Loyd on Vocals and Guitar, Nic Dehaan on  Guitar and vocals, Ross Troost on Bass and  Kyle Scarborough on Sax and vocals, but together, there is magic here. There is also a hell of a lot of rock. It’s not a coincidence that Banana Gun is already one of my favorite bands around...

  • Well, this is a jam packed weekend kids, no doubt about it. There is so much action going on its unbelievable and I’m not just talking about what will be happening in peoples pants, rather, what will be happening at venues across the valley. The kicker for me is that my beloved Jeepster is in the garage and I will be damn lucky if I surface at all this weekend. Thus I encourage everyone to make the most of this incredible list of shows that I will most probably miss. Although, I must admit when I see a lineup like...

  • Well, hell it’s been a damned rocky road to get to 2014. I feel like last year I was trucking along full speed and killing it with unbreakable momentum. The fact that I haven’t posted in over a month proves that I hit a roadblock. I apologize for ducking out for an unplanned hiatus. Hey, I’m only one guy–I don’t have a staff and only occasionally do I have other contributors, mostly this is a one man show. A show I intend to get back on the road. The main problem for me began in October when there was a...

  • One of my favorite debut bands of 2013 is, without a doubt, Fairy Bones. One of four bands born from the ashes of Born Loser and The Hangers On, Fairy Bones is a dynamite four piece who released their debut on October 15th. First off, singer Chelsey Louise is a goddamned firecracker on stage and the band supports her histrionics and indulgences with smiles, grins and a furious garage groove.  Until last month, I wasn’t entirely sure how their performance would play out on record, but I had nothing to worry about—the recordings have come out with enough visceral energy,...

  • Over the last two years six young men performing music deeply steeped in Americana roots and traditional folk music have made an enormous impact in Arizona music. In the last year alone it’s been difficult to go to any venue without seeing a flyer for Jared & The Mill or, in fact seeing them play. These years of continually playing together have primed Jared & The Mill for a thoroughly engaging album featuring originally composed songs that combine their inspirations of Folk Music, Bluegrass, Americana, and good old Rock ‘n’ Roll. They also seem to have a broad appeal to...
