  • Well, hell it’s been a damned rocky road to get to 2014. I feel like last year I was trucking along full speed and killing it with unbreakable momentum. The fact that I haven’t posted in over a month proves that I hit a roadblock. I apologize for ducking out for an unplanned hiatus. Hey, I’m only one guy–I don’t have a staff and only occasionally do I have other contributors, mostly this is a one man show. A show I intend to get back on the road. The main problem for me began in October when there was a...

  • As some of you may or may not know, I became freed of my day job on May 1st–the news of which I greeted with, at worst, ambivalence and at best a fair amount of happiness. Honestly, I’ve been missing out on a lot of killer shows during the week and the opportunity to spend a few weeks checking out what’s happening between Sunday and Friday, kind of thrilled me. This time has not gone wasted, though, I’ve not spent every night at a show–I’ve certainly tried to make the most of it. I would like to say that first...

  • I almost think this should be called 23 Minutes Over Phoenix. It is a brilliant lo-fi recording of all that is great in Arizona and it absolutely brings me to my roots. Any band that can squeeze nine songs into 23 minutes instantly has my affection, in this case, it’s High Horse, who already has my affection. If you don’t know, this is the side project of the brothers Goodman of Necronauts. High Horse is Billy & Dale Goodman with Phoenix music veteran Mike Upsahl  (Stereotyperider) on board as well. Their brand of indie rock is nothing short of brilliant—and...

  • Clearly, I write about a lot of music–a lot of local music of all genres, categories and styles, but when it comes down to it, my soul completely belongs to rock’n'roll. There is no way around it, while I enjoy so many varieties of music, so many genres and sub-genres, what really moves me more than anything else is pure rock’n'roll. This is, in a sense, my religion. I make no bones about it and I’m constantly seeking it out, constantly looking throughout the local scene for authentic rock. It seems that while there is a lot of great music...

  • It seems lately that on any given Friday or Saturday night, you want to be at three different venues at the same time–the local music is that good and there are enough venues coming around to supporting it that the choices are getting more and more difficult to make. Friday, May 6th was one of those nights–there were amazing shows everywhere that night, but I hedged my bets and wagered on the one I thought was most apt to blow my mind and from what I understand in the aftermath, I made the right decision. My decision process usually works...
