Midnight Vitals Return!
Posted on September 21, 2013 | No CommentsI had actually forgotten for a moment how much I love Midnight Vitals, I know, it’s a terrible thing to say, but it was only for a moment. So when I got an advance copy of their brand new EP last Spring, I immediately had to dig out their Time To Go EP—something I missed out writing on, because I was about a year too late and got to re-immerse myself in their special brand of pure power pop with synthesizer flourishes. Well, as much as I liked their debut, in listening to equal matches of that and their new... -
“Like, Like” by Fairy Bones – Tuesday’s Tune
Posted on September 17, 2013 | 1 CommentThere have been a lot of great artistic debuts in the Valley of the Sun this year, hell, I could probably do a top ten list right now. Then again, I could do a top ten list of bands that have abandoned the valley or broken up or joined the Federal witness relocation program…so the world of music gives and takes in balance I suppose. One of my favorite debuts of 2013 is, without a doubt, Fairy Bones. One of four bands born from the ashes of Born Loser and The Hangers On (Sister Lip, Naked Pizza and Head are... -
Shows Around Town: The First Half of May
Posted on May 16, 2013 | 2 CommentsAs some of you may or may not know, I became freed of my day job on May 1st–the news of which I greeted with, at worst, ambivalence and at best a fair amount of happiness. Honestly, I’ve been missing out on a lot of killer shows during the week and the opportunity to spend a few weeks checking out what’s happening between Sunday and Friday, kind of thrilled me. This time has not gone wasted, though, I’ve not spent every night at a show–I’ve certainly tried to make the most of it. I would like to say that first... -
SoundsAroundTown Celebrates Two Years!!!
Posted on May 1, 2013 | No CommentsWow! That’s all I can say… …I can’t believe it’s been two years, today, since I launched soundsaroundtown.net. It’s been a hell of a ride in two years time. Statistically speaking, I’ve posted 165 articles in that time (two were not authored by me), 93 of them were in the last year, which is amazing since I pretty much took off May, June and July. My hope of hopes, is that in some way, this digital volume of local music adoration has contributed to the well being of the bands and the shows and all else featured here. This whole... -
Vote Zero Zero for Hard Rock Rising!!!
Posted on April 29, 2013 | No CommentsI”ve been pretty clear about my adoration and affection for Zero Zero since the start. Actually, very nearly since before the start–I fell in love with a demo I heard over a cell phone at The Sail Inn. Granted, it was an easy sell, I’ve loved the Love Me Nots since the beginning and to hear the two founders of that band apply themselves to a completely different sound immediately caught my attention. It’s been well over half a year since I heard that demo of “Drug”, since then they released Mayday, three amazing videos, and continue to introduce new... -
The International Pop Overthrow Phoenix!!!
Posted on March 13, 2013 | 2 CommentsMany years ago, when I was coming to terms with my musical illness and my compulsion to write about everything I heard that turned me on, I was just starting to get published outside the realm of my college newspaper, underground publications and philosophy magazines. When I began writing, I had never intended to become a music journalist of any sort–I was way into politics and social issues, but as time would have it, the two loves of my life became entwined and when my writing started to concern the music I loved there was no stopping it. It also... -
Gospel Claws Put Their Sunshine Away At Crescent
Posted on December 3, 2012 | 1 CommentSometimes you attend a show that you know will be mindblowingly fantastic, for either talent or sound or diversity and sometimes you walk away from that show shaking your head in disbelief, because although you knew it was going to be good, you didn’t think it would be THAT good. So was the case with the six band spectacular held by Jen Deveroux to celebrate the release of Gospel Claws second full length album Put Your Sunshine Away at Crescent Ballroom this past Friday night. Sadly, I can’t say I was there for the whole thing, I was paying attention... -
Vial Of Sound-VOS
Posted on November 26, 2012 | No CommentsEvery now and then I get something in my mailbox that I honestly can’t make sense of, I can’t wrap my head around it exactly and this is the point where my mind stands at attention and questions itself. I suppose it’s a good example of cognitive dissonance, but whereas most people want to hate things that cause cognitive dissonance, I prefer to figure out what is causing the discord or disguised appreciation (like that grade school crush that comes out in taunting and aggressive weirdness). So it was that I downloaded the debut of Vial of Sounds debut a...
